Dec 20, 2012 Full story: EDGE 1,477

I don't know if you're familiar with books in the "Dick & Jane" series. Two kids and their dog playing together. That's what we got in elementary school.
Two kids playing with their dog. The teacher never said they were straight kids, just two kids. All of a sudden it's important to say if they are gay kids but unnecessary to mention anything if they're straight kids. It's important for schools to have a "gay pride day" but not important to have a straight pride day. When was the last time you saw a straight pride parade?
Gay specific material in elementary schools should come with an opt out option for those who disagree with those values and that lifestyle.
Yes, I am that old.

I think you are making a lot of incorrect assumptions here.

Every day is straight pride day. Straights are not a persecuted minority, outside of certain small business in parts of San Fransisco.

Again, I'm fine with your opt-out solution in principle, but in practice is doesn't work very well most of the time. It also puts an unnecessary drain on school resources to provide alternative education during that time just because someone is an irrational prude.

"How can you say that something is legal but has an opt-out in school on the basis that some people don't like it?"

Since each person is different, the degree of harm caused by forcing kids to read books about gay relationships vary. Asking me to prove it is not much different than me asking you to prove homosexuality isn't a disorder. You can't just say that it isn't because 1/3 of the APA membership voted it off the list. Gays have no problem telling you that they are more suicidal and agoraphobic and then saying they ave no disorder.
The degree of harm caused by forcing kids to read books about gay relationships does not vary. It is always zero.

For you. Good news, you can read about gays all you want to at home.

No, objectively there is no harm caused, ever. Period. There is no disputing that fact.

Teaching about homosexual relationships IS alternative education.
As Judge Wolf so correctly put it, allowing an opt out would cause an exodus out of those classrooms on those days. Can you picture one or fewer kids with gay parents sitting in a room alone with a teacher?
As for school resources, it would be better to have regular classes and a special ed class for the kids with same sex parents, if there were any.

It's not FOR the kids with same sex parents. It's FOR the other kids to learn about the kids with same sex parents.

You have to stop thinking about this like it "IS alternative education." Not anymore. This is mainstream, pal.

And just like the racists before you who had to deal with the mainstreaming of black people, you have to deal with this.

This is the way things will be going forward.

When was the last time straight people had to hide in the closet for fear of anyone finding out they were straight?

When was the last time a straight kid killed himself JUST for being straight?

When was the last time a skinny kid told his mom he didn't want to go to school because the other kids picked on him? A kid with glasses? A fat kid? A kid with pimples? A short kid?

Do you think that gay kids are the only kids that feel they don't fit in? Any kid that commits suicide is troubled and more straight kids do it than gay kids. You stupid f***

The very fact that you responded in this way shows how clueless you really are.

Are gay kids taunted because of their sexual orientation? Yes!

So the question to you is:
Are straight kids taunted because of their sexual orientation?

My answer to that question is, No! What is your answer?

Do gay kids commit suicide because of the taunting the receive at school? Yes!

So the question to you is:
Do straight kids commit suicide because of the taunting the receive at school?

My answer to that question is, No! Because they aren't taunted, belittled, made to feel worthless. What is your answer?

Are gay kids thrown out of their homes because of their sexual orientation? Yes!

So the question to you is:
Are straight kids thrown out of their homes because of their sexual orientation?

My answer to that question is, No! What is your answer?

Oh, and some of those kids teased for being fat, wearing glasses, with the bad case of acne will also be gay. So comparing these tribulations with being taunted for ones sexual orientation falls flat as a rebuttal argument.

Of course they do you idiot. Some facts for you:
1. Suicide is the third leading cause of death among young people, resulting in about 4,400 deaths per year
2. Bully victims are between 2 to 9 times more likely to consider suicide than non-victims
3. 10 to 14 year old girls may be at even higher risk for suicide
4. According to statistics reported by ABC News, nearly 30 percent of students are either bullies or victims of bullying, and 160,000 kids stay home from school every day because of fear of bullying

Do a little research before making yourself look stupid.

Then you are stupid enough to say those reasons don't matter.
Only being picked on because you're gay matters. You're pathetic.

Do you even know what the topic of this thread is?

Hint: it is not school curricula. A smart person would realize this. Then again, a smart person would realize that David Parker lost his federal case, and failed to refile in state court.

You aren't too bright.

That's like saying being for slavery is being for choice.

It amazes me that you can't see the parallels between you and racists. It amazes me that you can't see that those people said the exact same kinds of things you're saying now, and they were completely wrong, and corrected by society - even though they were certain they were right - and you are the same.

It is actually quite mainstream, which is undeniable as the polls have shown. "Alternative education" is what you are looking for.

The tide has turned. Wake up and realize it.

You seem to have a fundamentally defective brain.

Society is not telling skinny kids or fat kids or kids with pimples or short kids that they were born wrong and going to hell for it, or that they chose to be fat or skinny, or that they're going to be thrown out of the house for having pimples.

You are an absolute worthless moron.

Your kids are going to live in a world that ridicules people like you, just like we ridicule racists now.

I noticed you removed and did not answer my first question (the topic under discussion) and removed my explanation as to why I answered no to the question you sort of answered. Again, you did not answer the third question.

So I'll further remove any ambiguity.

Are gay kids taunted BECAUSE OF THEIR SEXUAL ORIENTATION that results in them attempting suicide?

Are straight kids taunted BECAUSE OF THEIR SEXUAL ORIENTATION that results in them attempting suicide?

Are gay kids thrown out of their homes BECAUSE OF THEIR SEXUAL ORIENTATION?

All tragic and why schools are attempting to address the issues of bullying from the earliest grades.

And here's a fact for you: Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth are up to four times more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers.

If the taunting LGBT kids received was all the same (those issues you listed above) wouldn't they have the same rates of attempting suicide? Gee, what additional taunting do LGBT kids get that would account for this increased rate?

ALL BULLYING IS DISPICABLE AND SHOULD ADDRESSED AT THE EARLIEST AGES AND WHEREVER FOUND!!!

But because these other types of bullying are experienced by children regardless of sexual orientation, bringing them into the discussion about bullying BECAUSE OF SEXUAL ORIENTATION does nothing to shed light on the issue under discussion.
