Two police commandos were killed after coming under mortar fire when violence erupted in the standoff between security forces and a group of armed Filipinos occupying a village in Lahad Datu in Sabah.

Ten members of the group had been killed and four were hurt when police raided their camp, a spokesman for the group had said earlier.

One of the dead was a woman, Jaycel Kiram was reported saying today by Philippine news portal Inquirer.net in a news conference in Manila.

Jaycel, a self-proclaimed princess of the royal Sulu sultanate involved in the weeks-long standoff with Malaysian police, reportedly received the news from a brother of the rebel group leader that sailed from Mindanao to Lahad Datu on February 12 to stake a territorial claim on Sabah.

National news agency Bernama reported that its reporter saw the bodies of the two commandos being taken away to hospital.Silence has fallen on the seaside village after deadly gunfire erupted this morning between security forces and the armed Filipino rebels occupying the Sabah village, Philippine media reported today.
