I think it is a terrible thing for this 16 year old to be charged as an adult. He is NOT an adult. Yes he should receive some form of punishment but not reckless homicide. This is a terrible tragedy but should be treated as such. I wonder if this was the district attorney's son or grandson would this be treated the same way. I am sure this child is very remorseful for his actions and if at all possible, would take this accident back 100 fold. I feel for the family of the accident victim but I feel if this was a family member of mine that I would have to see that this was not a act of malicous intent but a horrible accident. This child does not deserve to go to prison and will suffer for his actions every day for the rest of his life just by the memory of what he has done.
Please pray for this child, his family and the victims family, they all need everyone's prayers. I also will pray for the district attorney that he see's that sending this young boy to prison is not the justice for either party involved.

First of all he is not a child, secondly it was not an accident. He should be tried as an adult that committed murder.

This is insane, Dj is NOT an adult..and the accident he caused was a complete accident on his part. He would never do that. I pray for the family that has lost so much from all of this. But do you honestly think that sending a child to jail is going to make anything better? The answer is NO. Dj has to live everyday with the pain and regret for what he has done. People act like he is some kind of monster..But her is just a good kid who made one mistake that screwed up his whole life, and the lives of others as well. But in my opinion, Jail time is not the answer to this. For all of the people out there that have children think of it this way, What if it was your child? What if they were in David James Mears shoes? How would YOU personally feel about your child being charged as an adult. Thats all i have to say.

If he is not a child, then what is he? If I remember correctly I think 16 yrs old is still considered underage. I am sorry if I affended someone but the way I see it, THIS IS STILL A CHILD. Yes a child that made a mistake that ended up causing a persons death. I never said he should not be punished in some way but treating him as an adult is not the solution. I am from the bottom of my heart very sorry for the victims family. I realize how they are in pain. I also have lost a loved one hit by a drunk driver so I do see both sides of the coin. My sister was not killed by a teenager but I would hope that if she had have been that I could open my heart and see that this was not an intentional malicous act. He did not set out that night to run over and kill someone. I think God wants us as Christians to forgive, especially when it comes to children. They even at age 16 still do not understand consequences for actions. I know God has forgiven him,and hopefully the family will be able to do this also. I forgave the person that killed my sister. Hate only eats away at your soul. This can be turned into a positive thing or turned into a negative thing. But just remember the clock can not be turned back no matter what happens to this child it will not bring the victim back.

A child is under 13 years of age. After that, 13-15, they are young teens, 16 and up, they can get driver's licenses and are considered young adults. He IS NOT a child, and he went through a redlight on purpose, so it wasn't an accident. If he didn't know he shouldn't break the law,(running a redlight), he had no business driving.

YOU ARE WRONG!! HE IS STILL A CHILD UP UNTIL THE DAY HE TURNS 18, AND EVEN AFTER THAT HE HAS ANOTHER THREE YEARS BEFORE REACHING THE COMPLETELY LEGAL 21. READ OUR LAWS. OUR GOVERNMENT SETS LEGAL AGES LIKE THAT BECAUSE OF THE WAY THE HUMAN BRAIN DEVELOPS. THIS COULD HAVE EASILY BEEN A COMPLETE ACCIDENT. ITS NOT OKAY TO RUN A RED LIGHT AND HURT OR KILL SOMEONE. IT ALSO ISN'T MURDER. HE DAMN SURE SHOULD HAVE STOPPED BUT I TRULY BELIEVE IT WAS AN ACCIDENT, HE MADE A BIG MISTAKE BUT PRISON ISN'T THE PLACE FOR HIM. HE IS NOT A YOUNG ADULT AT 16 AND 17 WHICH HE HAS JUST TURNED 17.
HOW OLD ARE YOU? CAN YOU REMEMBER BACK TO THE DAYS WHEN YOU WERE ONLY 16 AND 17 OR ARE YOU THAT AGE NOW AND THINK YOU'VE EXPERIENCED AS MUCH AS SOME OF US IN OUR 50'S THAT HAVE HAD CAREERS LONGER THAN THESE KIDS HAVE BEEN ALIVE.
THIS FORUM WAS REMOVED AT ONE TIME BUT ITS BACK. WHERE IS THE MODERATOR FOR WHNT THAT ALLOWS THESE COMMENTS? WHNT IS DISGUSTING FOR ALLOWING PEOPLE TO DEFAME THE CHARACTER OF DJ MEARS. THEY DESERVE A LAW SUIT OVER IT.

How was he defamed? Free speech, get use to it. Only your opinions count? You don't seem to know much about "legal age" so I'd suggest YOU read the laws. 16 years of age, you can get a driver's license, younger for motorbikes. If they don't understand the laws, we need to make the test harder, or raise the age limit. 18 years old they can vote, in some states 17, in a primary or caucauses, if they will be 18 at the time of the election. 20-21 years old, they can drink. Depends on the state. 14 years old, they can marry with the parents permission (In Alabama). So instead of griping about a news outlet letting people post their opinions,(exercise their free speech) get to work on raising the age limit for driving if you think they're too young. He was not a child. If they deserve a lawsuit for reporting the news, and letting people comment, would you support a wrongful death case against Mears from the family of the victims?

It seems to me that someone has a very hostile opinion of this "young adult". Do you honestly believe he run the redlight on purpose? Do you honestly believe that he killed this young woman and her child on purpose? I would be interested in knowing how old you are, I do think you have forgotten what it is to be young and reckless. I know I did things at age 16 that makes me cringe now (dangerous things). Can you say you never have run a redlight or got caught speeding? I have and I thank God every day I did'nt kill anybody. There are lots of things you do as "young adults as you call them" that could hurt someone, but you don't think about it like that when your 16. You think nothing like those horrible things I hear will happen to me. As I said, that is thoughts of a mind that has not fully matured!!! I guess in your mind the death penalty should apply.I'm sorry for you, one day you will look back and see how many years you wasted on anger and hate, it will eventually eat you alive. But in the long run nothing actually could be done to change the outcome. God has a plan for us all and we cannot change the day he decides to take us home to be with him. I pray that you find forgiveness.

IF you're posting to me, save all your holier than thou, bleeding heart bull. My question to you oh godly one is, where is all this compassion for the victims?(The two people killed are a 20-year-old mother and her unborn child.) I think it's YOU that should be worried, seeing as how you have zero compassion or feelings for this young woman, her family, and the child killed. Yes, when someone is negligent and KILLS 2 people it does make me angry. I was young but I was never reckless. Therein lies the root to this problem, people like you who want to give a pass to the ones doing wrong things. I'd be very interested in knowing how you feel I was "hostile"? Because I think he should be punished for killing two people? Where did I mention the death penalty? YOU need to stop the drama, stop putting words into people's mouth, and worry about your own salvation. It's YOU dear that seems very hostile and hateful. Don't waste your precious time praying for me, you need it a lot more than I do, and maybe you can throw in a prayer for the victims and their family.
The question posed was if people thought he should be tried as an adult. My opinion was that he should be. IF you don't like opposing opinions go crawl into a hole somewhere so you won't be exposed to them.

I apologize for sounding as if I do not care for all the hurt the victims family is going through. I never meant to sound that way. My heart breaks for their loss, I know first hand how this feels. I just also know that making another family hurt for what I feel like was a accident is'nt the solution. It is not for me to judge, what ever happens is out of my control. I hate it for ALL people involved. This has not only broke one family apart but TWO. And as for being "holier than thou", I am very far from that. I guess as I get older my heart gets alittle softer, that I won't apoligize for that.

Actually Sir, David James Mears did face a "Wrongful Death" lawsuit from the victim's family that was filed shortly after he was charged. Since David was still a child when this happened and didn't have a college degree with a good job guess who had to pay for all of it?-Mom! It was a huge expense having to post his bail, hire a defense attorney for the charges, and having to pay attorney fees for the wrongful death suit as well plus the judgment. Your posts are extremely cold and heartless because you don't seem to realize the hell that the Mears family had to go through with all of this, TWO families lives were changed, Yes I feel very bad for the victims family and they will never get their daughter and grandson back but David also didn't just "get away with it scott free" For several YEARS every day and night when he was going to sleep he had to wonder how long he might go to jail or prison for and his family had to pay HUGE, HUGE financial expenses; So yes I do think it that it WOULD be appropriate for WHNT to face a law suit for libel and defamation if they do allow posts that are defaming in nature which would include material that is "NOT TRUE" or intended to hurt his family which has been posted many times in the past but some of the old posts were deleted for whatever reason. I "get" your points but I don't agree with them. And for the record I do think the driving age should be raised from 16 to 18 (18 is an adult, not 16 and 17) The problem with that is we can't really send our kids off to college without knowing how to drive. DJ is over 18 now so he is an adult now but was NOT at the TIME of the wreck. Also note your point about- "14 years old, they can marry with the parents permission (In Alabama)." NOTE:*Parents* permission* because 14 is still a child, 14 year olds shouldn't be getting married but they do have to have consent from their "*PARENTS*"

I actually think Mr. Bestworking is like 22 or under and that's why he has that opinion. I bet he doesn't have kids either.

I love how people try to justify posting libel or defamation as "Free Speech" And obviously by "love" I am being sarcastic. Look up the definition of libel, look up the definition of HARASSMENT, dj's family was reading these posts at the time and many of the posts were harassing in nature.
