So Korea will import the cows younger than 30 months old first, then expand gradually to older than 30 months old?
That means, Korean people can be exposed to mad cow disease and Korean goverment will not halt the import even in case of mad cow disease happens in the US?
What was the reward from US goverment to South Korean goverment by accepting this unfair agreemnt???

"I feel it is regrettable that allegations over safety have been raised that lack a concrete scientific basis," Chung said. "U.S. beef is safe from mad cow disease."

old chung has been around bush et al at usda too much. bush does not know what 'sound science' is. it's commodities and trade, to heck with science and human health, especially with a long incubating disease that's 100% fatal once clinical $$$

You are totally ignoring what is really happening in Seoul, Korea. Korean farmers are not the only people who are against over this deal, and they are not only concerned of dropping price of their live stocks. Listen and search what most of Korean citizens have to say about it; this is not about being against U.S. or anything. They strongly feel that their lives are threatened by the beef from cattle over 30 months old that have higher risk of having mad cow disease. If you were in their (Koreans) shoes and think what it would be like to feed your children the beef that can cause variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. What the Korean government authorities had said are not important, Korean citizens don’t believe in their words and are angry at them. It would have been better if you also write about how most Korean citizens reacted in this issue along with what Korean government said. And let your readers know what is really going on in Korea. I hope you learn more about recent studies of mad cow disease; I believe you’ve got to study and know well about what you are doing to write.

All koreans are in a panic now.
More than 1 million people voted to prevent the importing
of the cows that are in risk of mad-cow-disease.
Almost all forum are filled with the fears.
But, the goverment acts like a deaf.
Why, does USDA ignore the risk of the mad-cow disease?
I think all Americans are also in danger.
Please see the video.

First of all: Not all Koreans do disagree with what was agreed between USA and Korea. Only because a couple of thoused protesters (mainly students who have no clue what they demonstrate for) have been in the street it doesn't make the mijority!
Second: If you sell meat you have to tell your customers where the meat comes from. That is the regulation in Korea! Therefore everybody can decide what he eats and feeds to his/her children. You can decide if you buy Korean, Australian or US beaf. WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM??? If you don't like US beaf then don't buy it. It is the same with any product. If you don't like Korean car then don't buy it. If you don't like Korean electronics, then don't buy it. It is simply the customers choice. Please let the customer decide and don't try to tell others what is good for them! Korea should stop beeing so protective for their domestic market and exept that if you want to export then you need to allow imports too.

Well, even I disagree with the emotional discussion about US beef the comparison you make is .... well put it into your own words "idiotic". Why? Well first of all the Koreans do not try to export their chickens to USA and second everyone knows that the virus of bird flue can easily be destroyed by boiling it. Therefore the danger is limited. Please be rational. Thx!

The scientific fact is that the American beef supply is proven safe from MCD. The expanded testing programs have confirmed this, and the food safety is not in question.

These protests have nothing to do with public safety - in fact, Korean safety standards are far inferior to US standards. The fact is that baseless anti-American rumors are again being spread by cynical forces.

Although 96% of US beef is consumed by Americans themselves, the rumor is being spread that Americans are shipping meat overseas that they themselves won't eat.

The scienfic facts about MCD are being witheld from the Korean public by the typical radical elements that routinely distort the facts, including the teacher's union and others. They understand that the Korean public, like lemmings, are gullible and easily manipulated.

Robin, you be rational. The danger of bird flu may be limited but the danger of MCD in the US food supply is nonexistent.Removal of specified parts from cows completely eliminates MCD.

The incidence of MCD in the US is zero. In England, where it affected thousands of cattle in the 1990s there were about 100 deaths. But in the US, experts have placed the odds of human MCD at a fraction of a percent and scientists say that it is simply not an issue.

Also, Korea does export to the US - not chickens, but cars, cell phones, etc. at far below domestic prices. The US has allowed this for years despite its detrimental impact on the US economy. The Korean US balance of trade has always been lopsided and this is what built the Korean economy. It is an unfortunate Korean cultural trait to take advantage of Americans while not giving back if it can be helped. Americans should be informed of this.

The on-going saga over beef in Korea is nothing short of mass hysteria and gives the educated outside world the impression that there is nothing going on between the ears of the public in Korea. Actually, what's happening is that the media in Korea, who are left-wing and anti-government, are manipulating the public by denying them balanced reporting and access to the facts on the credibility of the "threat" from BSE.

A simple study of the facts are quite informative. The UK is the best studied country for the incidence of BSE and CJD, since this is where the most cases have been reported over the longest period of time. From 1990 to 2007 there were over 1000 cases of BSE and 163 human deaths from CJD out of a population of 60 million people. This compares to over 60,000 deaths from road traffic accidents over the same period. After meat processing precautions were put in place, deaths from CJD have fallen to a negligible level in the UK, even though cases of BSE are still being reported.

In the USA, there have been 3 cases of BSE and 3 cases of CJD (one of whom contracted the disease outside the USA) out of a population of 300 million. More people are killed by lightning than by CJD. I am a research scientist and with those odds, I would far rather go out to eat beef in the USA than chicken in Korea, despite the fact that cooking kills the bird flu virus (I have come across more than a few restaurants with poor hygeine).

The poor stupid Koreans that are lining the streets protesting are actually being completely manipulated by elements in society with an agenda to destroy the badly needed reforms for the increased global competitiveness of Korea. A few companies like Samsung are keeping the country alive, but there are so many dead wood with stupid thinking that I don't think Korea has much of a future as an economic power.

Koreans are concern about the beef import from US. In the recent deal, US could export certain parts the animal that are banned in the US even for pet food. Would you eat anything that is not even safe for dog?
Koreans do not hate Americans. They are angry with their President who is responsible for the deal. After all, as we are proud American we do not want sale something that we would not feed our dog to our friend for human consume. Do we?

The risks for mad cow disease is not the reason for the protests. It is completely irrational. If there were a risk, they wouldnt approve the export. People in the US eat it all the time, and dont get sick. I think the protests are really about being anti-American and pro-Korean. Its OK for Korea to export all of their products overseas, but they dont like buying foreign goods that wont support their economy. This is called global trade, and Korea benefits enormously from this. Additionally, how about beinng more respectful to the USA who have spent billions of dollars supporting Korea during the war with North Korea. Without the USA, Korea would be a communist country.
