BOGALUSA - City detectives are investigating an abuse case of a 6-week-old who was "burnt, beaten and drugged," police said.
The baby, Diana Nelson of Bogalusa, is being treated by doctors at Children's Hospital in New Orleans and was found to have blunt-force, "non-accidental" trauma to the head, causing skull fractures, Bogalusa Police Detective Joe Culpepper said. She remains at the hospital in critical condition on life support. Doctors at the hospital are running tests to see if the infant will regain brain activity, family members said, adding life support may have to be pulled if the baby is unresponsive. The baby was still on life support this morning, a family member said.
BPD received a 9-1-1 call at about 1:30 a.m. Monday from the West Eighth Street home of Ashley Buras, who was babysitting the baby and is the child's godmother.
"Her hand was cold, and it dawned on me that she wasn't breathing," said Buras, adding she woke up at 1:28 a.m. to check on the infant. "She was lifeless in my arms, and I started CPR on her."
Buras said she had checked on the baby about two hours earlier, and the infant seemed OK. "She was sleeping, but she was fine."
It's unclear exactly when or how the injuries took place, but Buras said she noticed a burn mark on the baby's arm when she took the baby to her home on Sunday evening.
The baby had spent much of Sunday at the residence of Allen Daigle, the baby's grandfather, on West Tenth Street.
"She was in my lap, laughing and giggling," said Daigle, adding the baby showed no signs of abuse through Sunday afternoon. "My grandbaby didn't deserve any of this. I hope whoever is responsible for this pays and they pay dearly."
Daigle said he left home Sunday evening, and the baby stayed there with several family members, including the baby's mother, Lindsey Daigle, 19. When Allen Daigle returned home later that evening, everyone was gone from his home, he said. He was awoken after 1:30 a.m., and told of the baby's condition, he said.
A neighbor and family friend, Amy Thomas - who routinely would help take care of the baby - also came to Allen Daigle's residence Sunday afternoon, about 4:15. Shortly after, Thomas changed the baby's diaper.
"That's when I noticed the marks," Thomas said, indicating cigarette burns and possibly a burn from a lighter on the baby's arm and leg. The burns looked to have been made earlier that day or before, Thomas said.

Oh good lord how terrible. I had not heard of this story. My heart is broken for that poor child.

I never understood why people pick on babies. It takes a sorry jackas to do it though.

Thomas, 22, said she fed the baby, and then noticed Lindsey Daigle asleep on the couch, and decided to take the baby to her home - three blocks away - for a bath.

"I could not get Lindsey to budge," she said. "I took Diana to my house."

Lindsey Daigle confirmed that Diana had left with Thomas.

"I let my baby go with Amy for an hour," Lindsey Daigle said.

Thomas said she was gone for far less time, however - more like 15 minutes. Thomas bathed the baby, rubbed her down with baby lotion, and immediately brought her back to Allen Daigle's residence.

Thomas said she called Lindsey Daigle later that evening, and the mother confirmed the baby was fine.

Thomas said she repeatedly told the mother to bring the baby to the hospital for treatment of the burns.

Neither woman said the baby was dropped in any way Sunday afternoon or evening, and no one seems to know how the head was injured.

Both women say they suspect the other of giving drugs to the baby.

Police say the baby's injuries occurred between Friday and Sunday, and benzodiazepine - a tranquilizer commonly in the form of Xanax - was discovered in the baby's system.

Detectives have been working on the case since the 9-1-1 call came in Monday morning. The Louisiana Office of Community Services, which handles child welfare, has become involved with the case, Culpepper said, adding other child-care cases have come to light surrounding the tragic incident.

At least three other children were taken into state custody Monday, The Daily News learned from sources involved in the case. The children may have been returned to family members by now.

Allen Daigle said OCS had been called three times concerning care for Diana since she was born on Jan. 16, but little had been done. Another relative said Diana's mother would neglect the baby at times, but never abused her.

"Deep down, I don't believe my daughter did this," Allen Daigle said.

Thomas, a mother of two, said she would never hurt a child.

"I know that I did not harm that child in any way," she said.

Police say there are multiple suspects in the case.

I cry each time I see that baby's face. She's so adorable and looks so innocent. I just have this feeling her life is ending and she never even had a chance in this world.

I pray there is a God where she can now be happy...

I hope they get what is coming to them now, but you're right. I don't consider anyone, who could hurt a helpless child anything human, I started to say animal, but I just looked down at my old dog and they are no where as decent as he is.

I know what you mean. I think more of my dogs than the jerk who did this.

This is so sad. I have three children and two step children I also have 13 grandchildren. I can't imagine this happening to one of them. Where do these monsters come from? What could this child have done so bad to deserve this?

What is the matter with these people? Have they no souls? Too bad we can't do to them that they did to that child?

Video: Baby Sitter Charged In Baby Torture Case
Beaten, Burned, Drugged Baby Dies

NEW ORLEANS -- Six-week-old Diana Nelson succumbed to her wounds Thursday around 2:30 p.m., according to a hospital spokesman. Nelson had been on life support for days, having been beaten, burned and drugged, according to police.
Bogalusa police said they arrested a baby sitter, Amy Leighann Thomas, 22, Wednesday.
Watch: Baby Sitter Charged
Police said Thursday that Thomas is charged with cruelty to a juvenile. Police said her charges would be upgraded to murder if the child died.
“I had no idea what was going on," said Nelson's uncle Allen Daigle, who was present when EMTs took Nelson.“All I seen was the pale face and the blue lips. I didn’t see the burn marks until I went to the police station.”
Investigators said they examined Nelson at the hospital and found evidence of severe child abuse.
Bogalusa Police Department Sgt. Darrell Darden said the child had suffered blunt force trauma and head injuries consistent with being beaten by a fist, and that Nelson had a skull fracture. He said Nelson had also been burned repeatedly, and had been forced to swallow some kind of antidepressant like Xanax.
Investigators said the burn marks were similar to curling iron burns.
"It's a terrible situation," Darden said. "What's best for the baby at this time is to find who done this and make them pay."
Nelson's 14-month-old sister was taken into protective custody pending the outcome of an investigation.

Baby Diana died today. They arrested a female friend of the mother's and most likely will charge her with murder.

They are not people, at least not in my book. If they are humans, then I withdraw from the race. Miserable low life cowards of some species.

I figure these two girls were doing drugs or smoking, why else would the mother be so tired as to be asleep on the couch yet her dad kept the baby in the daytime and her brother and brothers girlfriends had the baby in the evening, overnight at 6 weeks old and her friend decides to walk to another house to bathe the baby? I have a 6 week old and this is very strange. One of them had a lighter, which was hot from recent use, went to pick up the baby, baby screamed when the lighter (hot) burned her skin, either that person then dropped the baby or dropped the baby later during the bath (which at 6 weeks should only be a wipe down so why the trip?) To quiet the babies crying from the burn and or the drop, crushed up a "downer" to cause the baby to sleep and gave her too much. Poor poor sweetie. Please God I hope the pain and misery was kept from this baby and you took her. I saw the Dad and Mom on television and the Mom sure looked more scared then sad and worried.
