Go to Sonic and it's a hamburger only. You hand carhop a $5 bill and she stands there looking like you are supposed to give the remaining $2+ as a tip. Trust me Sonic, it's not worth a $5 bill for your burger and a carhop.
I do not mind tipping, but I seem to have a problem with Sonic. A drive through does not bother me and the carhop I have no clue why they feel the need to have them. It's like the people who hold those signs for businesses. I do not tip the chick at McDonalds or any other fast food so why the heck doesn't Sonic pay their people minimum wage.
Again I will say I am confused why a carhop showed up at my window when I was at the drive through. I chose not to tip, I did not tell them to send her to my car. In the meantime she stood there looking pissed.
I currently work at sonic. And we really only get paid on 2 days of the month only. Sometimes checks don't come in for 3 weeks. We do not make minimum wage. But we are tipped accordingly to the way we present ourselves and how we give service. Service is our MAIN priority. The reason we have carhops is because we have stalls and it was started years ago when our grandparents were kids. To answer your question as to why carhops come to your car in drive thru on or sometimes not on skates is because we make your food as soon as it is ordered. Sometimes your food order may be completed before others. We do this so that when you do finally make it to the front of the line Your food is not cold. We will NOT send cold food to customers. This is convenient for all customers including yourself. This is one of the many things we do to reduce your wait times so that you can enjoy your day without the long waits of a normal long drive-thru wait. The job of a car hop is not what meets the eye. Carhops, even though we get tips sometimes pennies, a nickel or dimes that may be degrading.(no offense) a carhop must be able to carry the capabilities of handling situations under pressure. We still do our best to smile. Not all of us are willing to quit even though we would desperately like to at times when we are everyday walking, running, and skating orders out in the heat, cold or any weather. Not because we have what most fast food does not have. Family values and we do our best to see those values are met. Even when customers as yourself don't believe that our hard work deserves a dollar or 50 cents.
Even still we will continue to give you your fresh food as fast as we can with our best attitude everytime.

If you feel obligated to tip the person at McDonalds, tip the person at Sonic. If they're making a special order, coming by to check if you need refills, grabbing your trash as you finish with it, etc, then by all means slip them a couple bucks.
To answer to your statement the difference between McDonald's and sonic is that most their food is per cooked long before the customer even gets to the place. I work at sonic and all our food is fresh ( which is why you wait longer than McDonald's) and the work we do is FAR from "the least amount we can do" there are many things we do that makes our work less than easy. Unlike McDonald's no carhop makes "minimum wage" we are below salary granted not 2.13 an hour but we can't even be compared to McDonalds as a restaurant. Sonic drive-ins carry family values that we strive to reach with every order we scan on to get that order to you as fast as possible wether walking, running, or skating( and believe me I'm a skating hop and taking orders to customers on skates without injury is a TASK.) to be sure your food is Hot and Fresh the moment you take your first bite. And I will tell you carhops honestly at a point do not have an easy job. We come to work with our own money in order for you to receive change ( our company does not provide that for us) everyday we face the risk of being robbed, short changed with customers who pay orders with large amounts of change, injury when skating huge orders out. We also are in charge of making your drinks if you order drinks or Ice cream, which includes limeades, lemonaides, fruit slushes, flavored slushes, teas, shakes, blasts and all our other drinks excluding our come products unless you add extras are by far machine made. We make those ourselves by hand with fresh fruits not canned or bottled or premade by some random food distributor. After all tasks are completed inside we rush with a smile on our face no matter how stressful the day has been to satisfy the customers needs(YOU) and if there is an order problem. I must say we will run out of our way and while continuing to care for other customers between orders and checkbacks a d making customers drinks we will make sure you have your order made correctly so that you're satisfied when you leave our lot. Our main goal is to WOW every customer with our service.

This is true. We work harder than they even think and believe we run orders to cars by foot or skates with many risks everyday just to be sure the customer gets all they ordered and to make sure we let them leave with a smile

I agree it's ridiculous to tip someone who only brings me my things one time. I am a server myself, but I find it ridiculous that they get tips for just going out and bringing people the order and nothing else. I get drink, refills, entrees, etc. I'm constantly running back and forth between tables checking on them. I only get about $2 per table and they are getting probably about the same amount without as much work. I do tip them because I feel obligated and I know it sucks to only make $2.13. I don't blame them, I blame the company that they work for. They established the pay rate for their workers, not the workers.
Maybe to you it's a bit ridiculous to tip a car hop but we do make below minimum wage and we don't run all over a parking lot for nothing caring for numerous people on 28 different stations if we are that busy. And skating orders out is a lot harder than you think. We also make all your drinks and ice cream and mix all blast and shakes by hand. Plus we do check backs every 10-13 minutes. Your a server and yes you do have tables but how many? 3-5 at a time? It's easy to do that. But when you take out orders and they're heavy and skate them to you with a smile and good attitude it's rude especially when we make sure you have all that you need.

Also the point of a carhop is there on the lot when you drive up. There are 28 stalls . Who is bringing your food and making sure you have the correct order with a smile? Who brings you all your condiments ? A carhop. It's our job. We get tipped based upon the level of service we give . We don't just come out once either. Check backs are mandatory every 10-13 minutes

Shut up already.
You're arguing with posts made back in the spring. In the overall scheme of things, a Sonic carhop is far down on the list of anything that's meaningful to any of us.

Just bring people their grease soaked food and skate away.

Uh wow. Don't think you read a word I said. I wasn't blaming it on you all. I was agreeing to tipping because it's the right thing to do considering you make as much as normal servers. I was blaming the company for not paying you all more, not you. And actually I don't work out of sections, we go by rotation. I can have way more than that many tables. There has been many times when opening the store, I have served by myself and got a rush of about 8 to 10 tables almost all at once. I've never had a car hope come out to check on me except for one time. And I gave that person an exceptional tip like I would a server in a restaurant. I was merely talking about the ones that being me my food and drink one time and don't ever come back to check on me. And I still tip them! Geeze way to overreact.

Just wanted to put my thoughts here. I am a carhop at a sonic drive in. We don't have a drive thru but do have a back stall for trailers and such. It's the farthest stall away from the door. For some reason people feel the need to not tip after we skate all the way back there because in their mind it's a drive thru. Its fine we just consider them an asshole and move on. They are a waste of time and energy anyway.:) We will make our tips off respectful customers who understand how hard we do work. It's NOT THE SAME as say McDonalds or anywhere else. We bag, make drinks, take your order, and check on you if you choose to eat at our drive in. We take care of people who take care of us. WE DO NOT MAKE MINIMUM WAGE. That's very important to understand. If you still don't care and choose not to tip just know we will not really care much about you. Like I said before I just consider you incredibly rude and a waste of my day. However, I will always give the benefit of the doubt. If you're pissed off enough to make a forum, you're not the customer that we want so take your business elsewhere and save us the time and effort! Anyway I randomly came across this, and will probably never check back. Just wanted my voice heard. So next time you go to sonic tip your server if she takes care of you. If she's rude, so be it. And for those of you who still disagree and don't care that's fine too. All we want is for you to leave so we can go back to enjoying our day.:) People like you are the problem in this world.$0.50 makes a huge difference and if you need your money that bad, stay home.:)

A nasty biotch like you makes me want to go there, order up a ton of food, and leave zero tip.
You really need to STFU.

Your stupid uneducated minimum wage ass is there to bring me my food. I don't want to hear about your problems. You don't like it, get another damn job.

Interesting you go on a public forum and call certain customers a**holes because they don't tip you at what most consider fast food. Many employers would definitely reprimand or fire a person for this.

I do tip Sonic workers usually 20% but if I get a $3 item, I am not going to give almost the same as a tip. Times are tough and I know many people do not know that carhops also work on tips. I know of several people who has had their extra change pocketed by a carhop withpust asking and was treated rudely but that has not happened to me.
Most jobs are thankless and many do not realize all the job duties. I do believe Sonic should pay their carhops more than letting them depend on tips.
So just stop and think about how statements like this could hurt you if they get back to your employer. It's ok to vent because most jobs deal with bad as well as good customers but it is politics wherever you go.

Here is the root of the problem.
1. When I was a child and teen 10% was a good tip for good service. I and my parents tipped more for great service and less for not so good service. As time and inflation came along the price of a meal has grown faster than the wage of a working class family. All while the servers claim 20% is the standard tip and most people that have not served claim 15% is a standard tip. I think this is how the government does us on property tax. The value of your house goes up and they build more houses so they should have plenty of money. But no they jack up the rate every few years as well.

2. Years ago, you got service when you ate out. Now, you get to ask for more bread, drinks, or whatever you need. They used to anticipate what you needed, and have it on the table. You have to waive most of the servers down for assistance. But this will only get worse with the entitlement attitude of young people.

I worked for tips as a cocktail waitress in a casino. Yes the drinks are free for playing customers but the bartender and waitress each get allocated 8% of what the casino charges normally, approx $3-$4, give or take for everything that leaves the well. And only got paid a tipping wage and at the time was $2.15 per hour. So yes tipping is expected in that situation as well as restaurants where a server caters to you. But in Sonic's case , this is a minimum non- tipping waged employees and I know because my close friends and neighbors (sisters) worked at sonic and told me what their wages were and how much they made bank at the end of their shifts. It's a pretty darn good income and they don't get taxed on the tips or get allocated by the government because the a full pay employees. So do not let these people try to bamboozle or fool you to think otherwise or bully you into tipping. They most certainly ARE just fast food employees. Although they do buy their own skates, but those can be claimed on your taxes as a deduction.

just one more reason not to be a customer of sonic. Their food is to damn high to beginning. with. It certainly costs enough to justify the employees making minimum wage. I went through there about a yr ago just to get a couple milkshakes for my kids. What a joke it was like eight dollars and change then the girl acted pissed cause i wanted my change back. I couldve stopped by the grocery for that same money and bought enough ice cream to make my kids puke ..here's a tip for you).....get a job where you are treated fairly. If people refused the employment practices of sonic either they would wise up and p
pay a fair wage or shut down.

I say if they want a tip, then make it to where you can add it to the receipt when you pay with a debit card. Nobody pays with cash anymore. I don't go there much because I never have any cash to tip with, but they don't make tipping with a debit card available!

ummm i worked at sonic, and we did make minimum wage plus tips. if the poster above said she does not make minimum wage, then it is because she makes more than minimum wage. sonic is not a restaurant where they expect the workers to live off of tips, they definitely pay their carhops at least if not more than the minimum wage. here is another kicker for you...when i worked there, the COOKS had their own tip jar, and wanted us to put some of our tips in for them.
