Yes, unfortunately there are a lot of people getting pain medications for reasons other than pain. Right now though, the rule of thumb is "pain is what the patient says it is." We have no medical way to truly measure pain. If a pain clinic is doing their job correctly they will be able to weed the patients out that don't need to be there. Pain medication should be a last resort UNLESS the person does not have insurance. Without insurance a person can't afford alternative treatments and unfortunately medication is the cheapest treatment. Pain clinics should be doing regular drug screens while also doing randoms with pill counts. Every patient should sign a contract understanding that there is a risk of addiction but also be educated on the difference between dependency and addiction. Studies show that only 10% of people in chronic pain management will cross over into active addiction.
As I said, if the provider is doing their job they will catch the ones that don't need to be there. I can't speak for anyone but myself on how things are done or should be done. I know how I do things. I opened my clinic so it could be an example of how a clinic SHOULD be. I didn't want a bad clinic opening where I live and furthering the mindset that all clinics are bad. I don't care who walks in my clinic. They will see it working the same way every day, for everyone.
Also ppl don't understand the diff between addiction and dependence. let me enlighten ppl on that..someone dependent needs the meds to function normal where addicts can need it for functioning normally but goes farther will it to get the "high". So it is sometimes really hard to tell if someone is an addict. So everyone who wants to judge don't be to quick to label everyone on pain meds an addict.

I go to the Prodigal office on Essary. I have been going to them for over a year. On one visit I needed an X ray and it was done there at that visit! I was very happy not to have to get a referral for my X rays! I have seen several of their NP's. I love Jennifer! She is my favorite. But all of the NP'S I have seen have listened well and taken their time with me. They have shown genuine care with me. Any services I've needed that they don't handle I've been given a referral. I go to Prodigal for Primary Care, but the office I go to does have 2 days a week now that they only see Pain Management patients. Unless your sick and need to be seen that day. Prodigal has done PM for a few years to my knowledge. But on a small scale and patients that have real debilitating pain from cancer (like my grandmother) or serious injury who need strong pain meds have been given a referral to a Pain Clinic. A Pain Clinic can do more in their office as far as care for pain management than a office like Prodigal. And I don't just mean pain meds. They have lots of other options for PM. And most can be done in office. I am very happy with the care I receive from the Essary office. I have heard some complaints from my grandmother about the Merchants office. And a complaint from a friend about the office on Kingston Pk near the Lovell Rd exit. There will Always be complaints about Dr's office's. So do your research and use your own judgment to decide if a Dr's office is right for you. Good Luck! And I wish you all the best! ;)

Side Note: Just last month they changed their phone number. I had to get their new number from their office. Their new number is not yet listed on their website nor could I find it when I tried to Google it.

My friend goes to Prodigal on Essary, or he did go there not sure he is going back. When he went for a check up, his heart was skipping a beat and they told him that they were setting him up an appointment with a Cardiologist and they would let him know when his appointment would be. It has been over 2 months now and still no appointment and can't get any information from Prodigal about the appointment. He went to talk to them about a month ago about his appointment and they told him to have a seat someone would be with him, welllllll he sat there for over an hour and a half waiting and couldn't get any information. He didn't go there for pain medication, he went there for blood pressure and being diabetic. He was going to a doctor in west Knoxville and thought he would change to a place closer to his home. I honestly don't think he made a good choice choosing Prodigal.

It did take 2 weeks for them to call me back with my referral for a GI Dr. All of my other referrals have been very quick. I will say that 1 of the front desk ladies on the ground floor is not a people person it seems. Bad attitude and acts like asking her anything is so horrible. So when I go I try to avoid her. I usually see a NP upstairs so I don't have to deal with the rude front desk clerk down stairs. It seems like their practices are changing how they do some things right now. So maybe that is going to take a little time for their offices to adjust. And for their patients like me. Only time will tell. But for now overall I am happy with the Essary Rd office.

Thanks, I will tell him about checking upstairs. He wasn't too happy dealing with the front desk, he was talking about one of them being very rude and not wanting to help him find out any information.

I heard that a group from Florida has bought the company. They own a lot of pain clinics or pill mills down there.

Well I am not going to be able to go to my appointment today. When I scheduled my appointment on Thursday last week I was told I would be going to their Kingston Pk location. I went to their website couldn't find a Kingston Pk location. I Google it and could only find old location on Kingston Pk that was closed a while back. I then spent an hr trying to call their office. No one ever answered! It's sad I really liked the physicians I saw with Prodigal. But it looks like I will be finding a new Dr office to go to. AHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

Get a clue, they are a pill mill. If you aren't a pillhead, they don't want you.

Must be. I don't take any pain meds at all. Only meds I get are birth control and allergy meds. Oh well I've found a new Dr already.

I've been going to the clinic on Essary Rd. for 3 years now.I go for check ups and medicine refills, and no, not pain pills.I know they do pain management on certain days but it doesn't affect me so I don't worry about it.I've always been treated well and promptly, and they got me in with the kind of specialist I needed. They only take insurance too.I can't speak for the other places but this is a good place to go.

Are they still the owners of the clinic on merchants? Cause that one has opened back up recently with a new name.
