Last night she forecasted today to be cloudy with rain this afternoon. She may be hot but she's just as bad as the other 2 idiots at that station when it comes to predicting the weather.

Just because you miss one weather forecast doesn’t make you an idiot. I can assure you that most meteorologists are well above average in terms of intelligence and likely much smarter than you. Atmospheric Dynamics and Thermodynamics within their major in college would overwhelm most people, not to mention synoptic meteorology. Meteorologists are scientist, so they are obviously pretty smart.

The weather models are very sophisticated and the overall accuracy of forecasts is actually pretty good. However, when you are dealing with a complex dynamical system in which chaos (in the mathematical sense) plays a role, then you are going to have some missed forecasts. Regardless, when they accurately forecast a major severe weather system like April 27th several days in advance, then many lives are saved. Unfortunately, those forecasts aren’t appreciated and soon forgotten, but the occasional missed forecast seems to be remembered vividly. For example, they say the NWS has an accuracy level of around 90%. But, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard people say that “weathermen can get anything right”. People only remember the 10% that is missed, not the 90% that was accurate. That is their problem, not the meteorologists.

I’ll leave you with this, why should we even be able to predict the future at all? We do that when predicting weather, and actually do a pretty dang good job. It isn't nearly as easy as most people think.

they rely too much on computers instead of using the basics .. they overlook things that go on . they predicted weather just about as good 25 yrs ago .

I actually agree with the first part. Many meteorologists rely too much on model output and forget to include their own instinct in the forecast.

However, forecasts today are much improved over 25 years ago. We are as accurate today at the 5 day range as we used to be at the 3. That doesn't sound like much, but it is huge if you really understand the physics and mathematics behind it. Plus, technology has allowed us to issue tornado and severe thunderstorm warnings much more accurately today. The new Dual Polarization radar system should help with nowcasting as well when it is installed throughout the country. Meteorology isn't an exact science and never will be, but meteorologists as a whole do a wonderful job trying to predict the future. It is an incredibly difficult task, and most people have no idea just how much goes into it.
You got that right

Most of the comments I have read on different blogs from people in East TN shows a severe lack of maturity, literacy, and respect for others. Cheryl Scott is doing a fine job on WBIR. She is a degreed meteorologist and she knows her stuff! She is very attractive, she dresses nice, she speaks well, and she is a true professional. Anyone who bad mouths her is just jealous of her success, because they are so miserable in their own life that it makes them feel better to trash someone else. Low-life people like that cannot stand to see someone else be happy. This is typical of the no-class mentality that exists here in East TN, and it has been this way for generations. Bad parents breed bad parents, and the pathetic cycle continues. People like us, who move to this area from more sophisticated cities, immediately see the lousy, rotten, miserable culture for what it is, overwhelmingly disgraceful!
Then leave
