Small potatoes that one.
My local area to the E. of my dot on the map in the Swath from Nuneaton-Mancetter-Atherstone had a considerable number of cases of genuine "manganese madness" resulting from MnO4 ions leaching out of the lower cambrian 'manganese orebody' precipitated shale. The sufferers had a water supply derived from wells sunk into the shale.
Not a good place for homesteaders to sink a borehole!
Precipitated MnO2 in the subsoil under spring seeps flowing over the impermeable later (Triassic) Mercian mudstone onlap was mined in the early years of the industrial revolution. A lot of mangenese miners also went gaga.
Good news for me is that I live on the brown lower canbrian iron precipitate shale overlying the (initially black and weathering pink) manganese shale, so no gaga there, but have surffered the lunacy of several of the inhabitants on the pink soil whom have a position in the local civil service.
Have a nice day: Ag
