This event was the result of the recompression of the Calabrian backarc basin (Calabria-Sicily-Malta).

This basin is in the late stage of recompression with the least compressed bit in the SE. area S. of Etna where the backarc basin crosses over and doubles up with the Tunis backarc basin becoming a double arc (zygomorph) with a central rift @ Pantelleria.

Latest indications are that the last Rebound/Long duration Mercalli X event thare resulting in a tsunami was at least 3550+-150BC and this may be an underestimate.

Reports of major crustal relaxation & tsunami in the Adriatic-Calabria region ~2000-2500BC appear to have been from the Aegean arc and Dinaride range of Yugoslavia (which caused an Eastward lurch of the adriatic block), and long fracture formation resulting in resurgence of volcanism at the campi Flegrei as the long appennide fracture was squeezed into the volcano.

The Dinaride range and Appenines sector are ALSO in the latest stage of recompression. The vectors can also be differentiated by the direction of thrusting (Calabrian backarc basin being NNW-SSE) and Appennine-Dinaride being NE-SW.

For other major tsunami in the Calabrian region right up to 1908... this is shallow crustal dilation and rifting of the S. part of the Calabrian backarc basin caused by magma filled fractures under calabria being squeezed into Etna (and occasionally also stromboli). The result of the rifting being a sudden water dispalcement &/or/both avalanching from the rift arms.
The last rift event in 1908 resulted in the Etna eruption series that led to the formation of the NE. crater (now the highest point).

The volcano is now erupting a fracture ftom the SE part of the backarc basin (Sicily-Malta) with an eruption series at the SE. crater.

Interesting also to see Bologna appear on Criminal report daily.

This should have sorted out some of the Whodunnit.

Have a nice day: Ag
