I'm a system builder of custom desktop PCs and a Microsoft Partner Network member so I obtained the eary releases of Windows 8. When I installed it on a virtual machine I was imediately dismayed. I did not like the look or feel of the "Surface" and navigating around Windows was not exactly intuitive. I found it extremely difficult to use a mouse to flip pages and such. Therefore, as a builder and user of desktop machines I would not recommend upgrading to Windows 8 if you have a desktop computer or even a laptop that doesn't have a touch screen. Since I don't own a device that has a touch screen that can use Windows 8 OS, I had no way to verify all the gleeming reviews I've seen, but it appears that it would function very well on a touch screen device.
