Cheevers statement pretty much sums it up. Working with a devalued currency, certainly has its negative aspect.

Compair that to earlier times, when funding was not the prime factor, in setting up a winning team, 1963 Jones won with a several year old car.

Interesting article. The cost of racing was one of the issues Tony George had with CART. Controlling the costs associated with racing was a issue for TG. Now the people that supported Tony's ill fated idea find themselves in the same situation that Tony wanted to fix. This is more proof that Tony lied or at best mislead people into following his crosseyed vision. Big money teams from Champ Car came over to the IRL and out spent the original IRL teams. How many original teams are left that followed the vision? Now the IRL has turned into CART light. The question must be asked. What was the problem to begin with? Now the IRL runs on street and road cources and has Honda as the engine supplier and the costs are rising again. Doesn't the IRL look a little similar to the CART brand of racing that Tony despised. Now open wheel racing has dropped off the radar screen of the American public. Tony had a vision of what open wheel racing should be and it turns out his vision of open wheel racing is what it was back in 1995. And Tony fived what again?

Chris,

Yur comments are very valid. You left out Tony's "vision" of giving American drivers opportunities. Seems like there are a whole lot of foreigners in the race this year!

Money buys speed and talent. It has always been this way in racing. That is why Tony George’s attempt to equalize the sport has failed. The result has degraded open wheel racing and the Indianapolis 500.

Those really nice Lola and Reynard chassis at $400,000. were just a ripoff. And not having those evil Ilmor Chevy engine leases anymore...well, cause, umm, ahhh, well, these honda engine leases are...well more american or something...

My $700,000 Dallara lawn darts are sooooo much better. Because...well they are NOT ugly..and ummm, ahhhh I SAY so!

Kiss the bricks! All of you!

The IRL and Tony will fix all of this - at least that's what they said when they formed the league.
