NASCAR is a retirement series for drivers like Danica, its where drivers go who don't have to be competitive to collect a big check. Danica will be a big "star" in NASCAR, she's good for 20 years of grid filling, endorsements, and selling over priced junk.

Like she did for most of her stint in the IRL? The sad truth is that the IRL is now officially the "Irrelevent Racing League", top drvers in the IRL get about the same amount of pay as top drivers in the Truck Series in NASCAR. The real truth is because of so many open wheel drivers not being able to hack it in the top three divisions of NASCAR there is not much of a current demand for these open wheel retreads in NASCAR.
Tony George had a great idea when he started the IRL but year by year he abandoned those original plans and just became another CART and now that the two have merged the series is still in trouble. With very few American drivers and a feeling that 1.5 mile stock car type tracks are too dangerous I am afraid that they will be losing some of the few fans that followed the series. An honest question, with the exception of The Indy 500, who really gives a crap about the rest of the series?
I agree the IRL has major problems, but NASCAR is also heading in the wrong direction. There is very little interest in the Nationwide and Truck series; the stands are empty, sponser are pulling out or cutting back, and teams are folding; the Sprint Cup series is also heading South. Fans are tired of the BS and are turned off and won't be back.

You are correct in much of your evaluation of the current NASCAR and this comes from a former fan who attended at least 6 races per year for many years. Both races at Richmond, both races at Martinsville, the Southern 500 (When it was the REAL Southern 500 at Darlington on Labor Day) and the World 600. I would also pick out a race or perhaps two at a different track so I could attend races at other tracks some years.
The current little fat drunk in charge and his stooge, Mike Helton, turned me off with many of their decisions, however, it was two issues that made me decide that I would never spend another cent with NASCAR Big Three racing.
Issue #1 was when they took the Southern 500 away from Darlington and Labor Day. What they call the Southern 500 today is a joke, there is none of the old festive feelings around the camp grounds, complete with display of the Stars and Bars. While I am not a big displayer of that flag (nothing against it and I use to Skirmish with the Dixie Artillary) it was a BIG part of the heritage and fun of the Real Southern 500.
Issue #2 Was a fair number of years ago when The First Stooge (Mike Helton) went on the Eli Gold show one night and stated that the expansion of the tracks in NASCAR was an attempt to get the "Yall" out of the sport. I do not use that term, however, I felt anger that this France Stooge would disrespect a group of people because of regional dialect. I also remembered that Mikey came from the Bristol, Abington area of Virginia/Tenn, so I guess his parents were not "The Type of people" that NASCAR felt were worthy of being at their events.
I made a promise to myself that Tuesday night never to spend another dollar attending a NASCAR big three race and I can state, with pride, that I have kept that promise.
Very good post. They got the "Yall" out in an attempt to attract the yuppies and the "water cooler" crowd. They did for a while, but it was just a fad, those fans are gone now, and so are many traditional fans like yourself.

Helton and France are banking on it! Along with pit row hissy fits, Jersey Girl type drama, some scandalous steamy hauler gossip (hopefully involving Jr), and maybe even a wardrobe malfunction. Wait for it!
