The Long Beach Grand Prix is bulletproof. Seriously. It's Iron Man on steroids. The race is preparing for its 35 th tour of the city streets on Sunday, this time under the flag of the Indy Racing League, and we'll get used to that somewhat annoying issue soon enough.

A nattering nabob of negativity post, and one with the word steroid.......original. If the race depends on you, it's history.

The rest of the world will have moved on and will hope for a great race, and a safe race. Perhaps you'll put a positive word in at the end.

The worst thing about the split was the endless whining and complaining from people like Bob. For over a decade, they never had to write anything original. Recycle and regurgitate the same complaints (year-in and year-out). Not a single new thought. Thank god for unification!!! Bob is like the two year old that keeps crying even after he gets his toy. Dude, let it go! After reading this article, I am glad I decided to attend Toronto, Watkins Glen, Milwaukee, Chicago, and Indianapolis races.

We have one open wheel series. The competition is entertaining. Why rehash old news? If you hate the IRL and Tony George there are plenty of other racing series to enjoy. Find another topic Bob, we are tired of hearing about the split.

Thanks for an honest article, instead of the garbage churned out by writers who know little about the sport other than what they read on press releases or who are 'encouraged' to write articles that might as well have been (ex: Pete Lyon's piece of pap on this week).

I was a Champ Car fan who, with good reason, never cared for Tony George's IRL IndyCar Series for the first 12 years of its existence, and who was not and is not about to suddenly change from that stance simply because IndyCar is the last series standing. Besides hating what Tony George did to the sport, I hate Penske, I hate Andretti, I hated Rahal, and I hated everyone else who took TG's "free money" to jump ship and join his "League", at the detriment of CART/Champ Car. So there's not much to like. If I was a "follower", I would have followed all the ex-CC drivers who moved to IndyCar years ago not just last year, but of course I did not then and I did not last year. And will not this year, on any year.

The only way this sport is ever going to come close to becoming as popular as it once was it to START FRESH.with a brand new series that is not owned (completely) by Tony George. This is what should have happened this year, after a single 'merged' season last year for reasons of practicality). I would have loved to cheer on "our guys" going head to head with "their guys" in a new series that incorporated the best bits of both series. But alas, it was only a dream, and as soon as the 'unification' deal was announced I knew it was a pipe-dream.

Tony may tell everyone it (his IRL visions and revisions over the years) wasn't all about power or control, but he's got exactly what he wanted in 1993, minus a few million eyeballs each week. Like you said, hollow victory.

I'm beyond caring any more. Let him have it, and let him wallow in it.

Spot on article.

The only thing more stupid than the idiotic temper tantrum / power play by Tony George that has flat out killed the sport (look at the TV ratings -.2 on Versus - dead series walking) is Danica's F1 aspirations.

I'd recommend going to the ALMS race on Saturday. The ugly, slow, IndyCars aren't worth bothering to stay for Sunday.

The pathetic 650hp IRL Dallara cars are going to pale in comparison to last years 750hp Champcars. Hurry up and introduce the new turbocharged IRL car ASAP.

Bob, you've summed it up perfectly. Racing, in some form, will likely survive, but we should never allow the revisionists to erase the memory of what was once the pinnacle of American open-wheel competition. The IRL is a sad, sad imitation of CART, and will never prosper as long as Tony George is in control. The ratings numbers say it all. Thanks for speaking the truth.

If the IRL is all that is left of a long war for North American open wheel racing then it wasn't a war worth fighting. Long Beach used to host a great race. I won't even bother watching this farce. FTG may have won his little war but his little league of racing still sucks.

I'll keep my memories of CART/CCWS. The Gomers can get all sweaty over Danicant.

The IRL got a 0.2 rating for their first race. That should explain everything to everyone.

Tony George is a moron who has only ran Open Wheel racing into the ground.

He wanted all OVALS all AMERICAN. Of which the irl is neither. 7 Americans and half ovals.

I will never watch an irl event I will never attend an irl event.

It's to bad I love Long Beach! And the Long Beach CART races were the best BAR NONE!

I won't be there. If you do go, I'd take some ear plugs and some anti-nausea meds.

I can't imagine the horrible sound of those cars echoing thru the buildings....

Tony George is truly a villian for our times. The manipulation of last years race in Japan and then bringing Danica to LB to talk over the broadcast of the Last CC race was truly an insult to this sport.

Anyone who ignores that really is just a "casual" fan of open wheel---- r maybe just a fan of the LB party. have fun- don't forget the earplugs.

Yes, FTG's hollow victory does nothing for the American Open-Wheel Racing sport, drivers, teams, courseworkers, safety teams, and support staff.

His arrogance is why the IRL is not racing, why Danica is not a winner, why Paul Tracy was told to go back behind the tax evader, and why the "faithful" who follow the series call their sister "honey".

You guys keep bringing up that motorsports genius FTG. Thanks. It reminded me that the septic system has been backing up lately. The smell is really bad. Of course you .1rl lovers wouldn't mind. In farming we use foul smelling substances to make good things grow. Let me know when the IRL is pushing up funeral flowers.
