Thank you Karen Hensel for your report on Pathway Family Center. Please review this website for more information about why people have protested Pathway and why there is so much controversy: http://www.pfctruth.com

It troubles me Indiana continues to use programs which have failed in other states. This one is just one of them. It also bothers me an organization not acknowledging the complaints of former clients. Rather than addressing the problems, it appears this center for children has simply brought them to Indiana. I wonder who many other programs this has happened with? Does anyone know?

There is no doubt in my mind that the program works. I'm just concerned for all the children and families that are in the program now. The organization is going under (with a quickness) and they've already got the money for treatment from these families and when (NOT IF) the program shuts down, they don't get that back. Who will help the kids then?

If those interviewed agreed that the program was safe and worked, and Pathways corrected the report that they were closed due to complaints in Ohio, and 8 found nothing wrong when allowed in the facility, why is this a story? And why doesn't this guy just pull his kid if he believes it isn't right for his fasmily? People, really.

Does anyone see a lawsuit coming? The end of the story says a young woman said the program changed her life for the better but we get a story claiming all sorts of bad things happen to the kids in there. You just know that some ambulance chasing lawyer has already contacted the parents and wants to sue!

Thank you Karen and Mark. Survivors of this modality greatly appreciate seeing the program being held accountable. To those satisfied parents... you should have done your homework before placing your child. PFC uses the STRAIGHT, Inc. treatment modality. Kids Helping Kids(KHK) also used it. They are all related. There was an average sized group in MI when, without any reasonable notice, PFC closed last month on Jan 30. GOOGLE!! Learn the history and methodology. PFC has enjoyed a small group of clients, 25 to 35 per facility, ever since it took over the treatment activities for the Michigan STRAIGHT in 1993. This is when STRAIGHT changed its name to the STRAIGHT Foundation and then again to the currently named Drug Free America Foundation. In 1994, PFC moved into Indiana and then acquired KHK in 2006, roughly 6 months after that program was featured on WCPO in Cincinnati. PFC was suspended by the Council on Accreditation in 2007. Instead of resolving the issue, they simply switched over to CARF. Since 2005, CARF has refused to acknowledge complaints from several former clients of PFC and KHK. Just this year, SAMHSA awarded CARF $500,000. PFC has received more than $600,000 in donations and free rent over the last 18 to 24 months. PFC works closely with ONDCP/SAMHSA/DFAF/PDFA/NFA/CAD CA. Indiana lacks the necessary oversight to properly police such programs. Check out ISAC Corporation for more information www.isaccorp.org

Drug rehab isn't a Disney amusement park!
It won't be fun! It won't be easy!
I guess this father would rather have his son deeply addicted to drugs than to learn an important life lesson.

I'm sure Mark West doesn't want his son addicted to drugs. But...there are OTHER, safer, and time-proven alternatives than shyster programs like Pathways. PFC relies on confrontation, isolation, and humiliation to coerce clients into compliance. This is a methodology that even Hazelden has dropped like a hot potato over twenty years ago! Studies have shown that "treatment" of this type actually INCREASES the frequency and severity of RELAPSE further on down the road.

Maybe if the complaining parent had been more of a parent, teaching, mentoring, educating, been more interested in the sons welfare, the son would not have to be in the program. Get real. About time parents of these troubled kids account for their welfare not wait until they are grown up and in trouble. Be a parent, not just a complainor. m

I-Team, you quote Mark West as if he is credible and an expert on drug treatment therapy, which he is absolutely not. Anyone can make a claim against anyone or any business. Yet you give West your station as a "mouthpiece" to talk trash about a program that has helped thousands. You failed to report the truth about this so-called father and his alterior motive to undermine his ex-wife. The courts have awarded his ex-wife sole custody of his son and West is angry and not involved. He has had police actions against him. I-Team, you knew this information yet failed to provide the full truth. Your "yellow journalism" to present sensationalism and controversy without the full story results in your station creating the court of negative public opinion. What kind of "investigative reporting" is that? It's not about the truth, it's just about ratings, correct? It certainly does not provide Pathway due process, nor does it reflect the truth.

West's claims are absolutely false. There is no isolation of clients. Clients do not touch each other, nor do they observe each other bathing or using the restroom as West claims. Clients are not "locked up" as West claims. His accusations will be fully rebutted with actual evidence against his hearsay. Pathway is fully accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF), an independent oversight and accrediting agency. Logic would indicate that if Pathway engaged in any form of abusive practices as West and the fringe critics claim, Pathway would not be accredited by CARFor licensed by the states where Pathway operates. Instead, Pathway would be met with harsh legal consequences. Pathway has the support of law enforcement agencies, court systems, schools, and other treatment programs. Graduates and their families are the largest referral source for Pathway. That would indicate many are pleased with Pathway's ability to help. WISH and I-Team, it appears that you prefer to give a public platform to an unreliable source (Mark West) than the real truth of the miracles that are happening with children and their families in this program. Shame on you and your poor judgement. Ken N., Pathway Graduate Parent

Kids Helping Kids in Cincinnati worked for me. I have over 4 years clean and still use the lessons KHK helped me learn. Terri Nissley wants someone to blame when it comes to how Pathway is a worthless rehab. Some parents don't understand and don't want whatever it takes to get their kid clean, which involves no contact and limited visual contact. Pathway cares about money and that's it. They have no interest in the well being of their kids and employees, as long as Terri is receiving her fat salary. This guy's kid seemed to be a pansie and definitely lied about what goes on there. Don't send your kid there though, it's a waste of $66,000 that you will be paying off while your kid is out smoking crack.

READERS' NOTE: William Earnshaw has been publicly attacking Pathway Family Center for a number of years with false information. Yet, he has never personally stepped foot inside a Pathway facility. He publicly claims Pathway abuses children, stages pickets at Pathway facilities in order to video the event and post on the Internet. You have no fact-based information to substantiate your lies. Your public smear campaign against Pathway is no different than if I picketed your computer business with signs of "Child Predator" or "Child Pornagrapher". You may be, but I wouldn't do that because I don't have the facts. Nor do you.

(William)"...without any reasonable notice, PFC closed last month on Jan 30."
William Earnshaw, get a clue. Are you oblivious to the economy and impact on many businesses downsizing or closing? Pathway is effected similarly.
(William) "PFC was suspended by the Council on Accreditation in 2007. Instead of resolving the issue, they simply switched over to CARF."
To be factual, Pathway was already well into the accrediting process with Council on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) when a false claim was submitted to COA, which was subsequently reviewed independently and found to be without merit. The "probation", not suspension as you claim, by COA is standard procedure when a claim is received. The claim's lack of factual merit resulted in its dismissal. False claims and false public accusations seem to be your mode of operation.
(William)"PFC has received more than $600,000 in donations"
Pathway is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization and often discounts the actual cost of providing treatment. Philanthropy is utilized to offset discounts and cover operating costs. This is typical for most not-for-profit entities.
READERS: The Internet is a useful tool, however it gives voice to anyone and allows them to say anything without responsibility.(William) is seeking revenge against a treatment experience he had in the 80's, which was years before Pathway Family Center even existed. It's a travesty that a program that is helping so many is being unjustly attacked.

I am a volunteer with Love on a Leash a pet provided therapy group and I visit with the kids at Pathway and staff every other Friday with my therapy dog Holly-Pup.
I am very disturbed by this allegation. This one of the best programs I have seen in my 20 years of sobriety. This has saved many teenage lives.
This father is acting out of anger at Pathway. He is the one that needs investigated.
These kids sure don't act like they are being abused in anyway and their parents seem to be very involved in their program.
When someone first enters treatment they are not allowed family contact for awhile. This is very normal.
Please take a look at the real facts in this issue.
Let's see a report on all the positive and good that is going on at Pathway.

I am very unhappy with the Wish Tv has handles this matter and the way it has been reported.
This One parent is acting like the one lady that was able to take prayer out of our schools.
I plan on switching the news channel that I watch and I will email all of this nonsense to family and friendly.

(KAM)"Kids Helping Kids in Cincinnati worked for me. I have over 4 years clean and still use the lessons KHK helped me learn."

Dear KAM, congratulations on your 4+ years clean! That's what Kids Helping Kids and Pathway Family Center are all about. That's our purpose.

KAM, with your angry response about Pathway and me personally, I felt it important to let you know that the short segment of me that Channel 8 aired was so taken out of context. It made it sound like I was anti- Kids Helping Kids. Quite the contrary. When Kids Helping Kids decided to close their doors in 2005, Pathway was trying to provide treatment to those that still needed it in Ohio. The reporter had asked me about the picketers in Ohio led by Anthony Connelly (WDTONY on this posting), and my comment about not claiming them was all about the picketers as Pathway had not treated them. It was not about Kids Helping Kids in general. I have had great admiration for Penny Walker and the Kids Helping Kids organization for 8+ years prior to officially acquiring the Ohio location in the Spring of 2006.

Kids Helping Kids, like Pathway, has had years of saving teens and reuniting families; teens that no one else could help.

Unfortunately, the media likes to sensationalize stories. Interviews were done with current and graduate parents, and current and graduate clients. However, Channel 8 chose not to air what the people actually being served by Pathway had to say. The truth doesn't seem to be important. I'm sorry that the piece that Channel 8 chose to air of me appeared to slam the very organization that was so instrumental in your dramatic life transformation. I am proud of Kids Helping Kids for that and I am proud of Pathway Family Center as we have so many like you that are clean and sober today as a result of our treatment program.

This is the same program that was just chased out of Cincinnati for its record of abuse, fraud, and lies.

Incidentally, Kids Helping Kids = Pathway Family Center. The Cincinnati branch used the KHK name until just a few months ago when it was chased out of town.

And it has been a fraud from the very beginning.

In most cults, people say "I owe my life to the group". This proves nothing other than the people in question _believe_ the cult saved their life. This proves nothing other than devotion. Seldom do they ever have anything negative to say about the cult and respond with extreme hostility towards critics.
