Souvenir sell-off leaves taxpayers empty-handed

Full story: The Indianapolis Star

Our position: RCA Dome memorabilia should be recognized as public property. Football fans -- and fans of basketball, marching bands and monster trucks for that matter -- can own a piece of nostalgia beginning ...

The logic of saying the items have no value except as connected to the colts is ridiculous. This whole stadium thing is a racket. Quit hosing the taxpayers.

If the taxpayers own the new stadium, why did Irsay get the proceeds from the naming rights?

right. my real jobs pays me enough to enjoy all the taxpayer funded entertainment in indy. you should try to pocket the tax money from your customers at the drive thru. then maybe you could get out of the basement more often.

Listen to you all. Wah, we don't get the money from selling off crap that nobody should want anyway.
The problem with your argument is you seem to have forgotten that we the people are still paying for that stuff...along with Conseco...Victory Field and I think there may still be a little debt on MSA. Oh, and we still have to come up with money to operate the stadium since Irsay gets to keep all the gate receipts for every event.

I have an offer for the residents of Marion county. If you all pitch in and buy me a great big, state-of-the art house, I'll charge you $60 to come over every other Sunday (winters only) for a little party. I'll even dance a jig or sing a song for you, so you can be entertained. Do we have a deal?

By the way, beers are $7.00 a can, and foam hands are $13.75.

i have lived and worked in marion county, indianapolis indiana all my life. google IP address. i'm happy to pay taxes for the developement and growth of a town that used to be a dot in a big corn field, and to some still is. the cost of living in indy is still pretty reasonable compared to similar sized coastal cities. i make o.k.$$$ but i'm broke and dont mind because indy is a great place to live and i cant take it with me when i go. this city has a lot to offer and yes, it's all over priced and over taxed. big deal, so is my home, autos, clothing and food but i manage. if i couldnt manage, i wouldnt have to move too far away to avoid the "evil taxes caused by mr irsay and his colts". ahhh a nice quiet life in the country, that's the ticket. if you wanna cheap, quiet and pollution free move to the sticks. otherwise, welcome to jungle.
Well, if you are happy to pay for it you should write a check instead of expecting those of us who don't want to pay for it and wont benefit from it to pay for it.

You really should get a clue before you make a fool of yourself again. Without Mitch the stadium would not have been built. Bart couldn't raise enough money in Marion Co. alone so he went to Mitch and talked him into pushing a tax on the surrounding counties to pay for it.

The amount each person pays each time has no relevance. Those two pennies are going to add up to more than a Billion dollars.

If it is such a good money maker the private sector would have jumped on it. But the private sectoir just has to make money, we the people are paying the bills.

Did you read the F-ing article? Irsay doesn't make a dime from this. Rest assured that the sale of any Colt's memorabilia won't contribute to another horrible Irsay pin-striped suit. It is a shame that the taxpayers won't benefit. However, if government sold this stuff, they would sell it next to nothing and not make near the cash that the foundations will reap.

irsay wont make a dime off of colts marketing rights eh?i guess i need to reread the article also.those of us who accept the premise that govt...wouldnt make a dime anyway...stand in the way of those of us who want to reform it.

So you love Socialism. It is not now nor has it ever been the responsibility of government to provide you with entertainment. If you can't do that without the government then I pity you. And if you can't do it without government maybe you don't make as much as you think you do.

Try real math. Those 95K are about the only ones that support it. Many of the other million+ people forced to pay it don't want it. Shoot, a good friend of mine is a die hard Colt's fan. I've known this guy since we were kids and he has been a fan since the Colt's stole away in the middle of the night from Baltimore. He is 100% opposed to making the people pay for the stadium.

You don't live a very principled life, do you? One cent or one billion dollars, either way it is theft. Why should we be forced to alter our lifestyle so Irsay can get his way and lets his team play 9 or ten times a year here.

A billion dollar stadium for maybe 10 games a year. What a rip off. And don't give me the line about the NCAA or others using it. If Irsay hadn't made threats the stadium would not have been built. Personally, I like the sound of the Los Angeles Colts. Let Irsay move his team to the land of fruits and nuts, He'd fit right in.

Doesn't someone still owe money for the Hoosier-RCA dome? Wasn't the 1% tax on prepared foods originally labeled as a "temporary tax"? Why are people from outside of Indiana commenting with such emotion on this issue?

get your facts straight. bart had a plan with slots at the tracks and otbs to pay for the stadium but when he got all the publicity here came kenley and bosma to steal the so called limelight and mitch and the legislature found another way to pay for the stadium. your pockets!but the legislature did finally use a way to get slot money from the tracks to help with your property taxes. how's that working out.where did the 500 million go?

Because Bart Peterson's Fred Glass negotiated the contract.
