City to pay fire captain $350,000 to settle suit

The city will pay a female fire captain $350,000 to settle a lawsuit claiming she endured taunts and unfair discipline and was wrongly passed over for promotions in the male-dominated Fire Department, a city ... Full Story

Does everyone miss the real story. A city attorney chooses to settle for $350,000 of your tax dollar instead of fighting the case. This is typical city attorney behavior in Indy. Even when the city is right, they still gladly gives out your tax dollars to avoid working. Now every woman passed up for promotion will come looking for a windfall.

And hey, didn't they just get a pay raise as well? Maybe it is this department that should really get a axe.

so everyone that hired on with her were discriminated against also for promotion? yep they couldnt attain max points either, so where are the lawsuits. she will get her money she will get promoted and she will still be alienated. Does that mean she will get paid again? lose/lose

IFD leadership. Staunch bastion of the Good Ole Boys Club for Misogynists.

If the City's insurance company is "lucky", they'll only see two or three more suits like this, before the end of the year.

It is an absolute, unquestionable fact that IFD lowered the physical standards to get women in the houses. It is also a fact that the people in their service district are less safe because of that action !!

Like it or not, it is what it is. I know the Capt. in question. There may be judgment issues. The discrimination complaint is not just isolated to Indianapolis or IFD. It is a National issue. Was she or wasn't she? Don't know that answer to that. Was the brass guilty? Don't know that one either. BUT, given todays social climate, those who chose to have a party to help out the 2 chief officers who were "caught on tape" discriminating are indeed guilty of stupidity.

i think this is a tough one... i agree that women are not as strong as men, and when the time comes, its going to be a man i want saving my house...BUT-- the good old boy stuff is lame. ANYONE, especially a leader, using the word 'dyke' needs to be canned.
the shame here is we get stuck with a female fire captain that does not have critical experience to make the correct decisions in critical circumstances--and we pay her for cave troll comments and attitudes...

It's a shame that our leaders don't stand up for the truth. Instead, they allow others to "speak out" for them in lame and degrading ways, and then we pay the "victim" off. Nobody wins.

Agreed. Many of our city officials are a pure liability (not an asset) to the taxpayers.

Yes She Is That Bad wrote:
Ruth has no business anywhere on a fire scene, especially if she is going to be in charge. Had she been a man, she would have never made captain. Her judgement is questionable at best, dangerous always. Then there are her EMS skills which are so far below par that if she ever tries treating me, my lawyer will get some of the citys money back. She has a lot of nerve suing because she was discriminated against; knowing that all she has gotten was because she was a woman.

SOME HEROES!!! oh there just men doing a job. no hero there. they have always had behavior problems. Let's not forget the porn stars who got nude and posed of pics in a IFD fire house. Little was done to those who had a part in that.

When I was a volunteer firemen we needed all the help we could get and we where open to women long before IFD. But the women were limited to what they where capable of. For obvious physical reasons they could not endure hose advancement into a working fire well at all and that is the basic in firefighting. So they led support operations that were very useful, pump operators,EMT's, safety speakers and inspectors. To be an fire captain it is essential to have fought all aspects of a fire, from internal firefighting to ladder and ventilation, hazmat and heavy rescue.
I seriously doubt this lady was qualified and the harassment she received unfortunetly was a misguided effort to persuade or pressure her out. It's not a good thing when firefighters do not trust their officers.
You are such a male jerk. I know many women that were in the engine Company "manning" a hose. I did usually 2nd on hose and up the ladder. I could pack hose as good as and better than most of the males.
Also experienced with the jaws and have ripped many cars a part.

Glad she won....now have payday for all the rest of the females treated unjustly.
