It is absurd how much more we are willing to play those who play and coach sports over important jobs like teaching, fire fighting, etc

It is more amazing that Mitch and his gang of trustees would hire a cheater and pay him like this. What are our young people to to learn from this lesson?

.... this database demonstrates what a racket the Universities are. A private sector job, paying between $50 to $100,000 .... is considered to be a GOOD paying job. Go down the list, and look at all the university job positions paying in that range. But even more astounding, look at the 2422 jobs .... again, mostly university, that pay in the $100,000 to $250,000 range (plus fantastic benefits don't forget). I'd be willing to bet that 75% of these individuals, particularly the non-university state employees ..... if put out on the street to find a new job, would find little opportunity to make half of what the government gravy train is paying them.

Nice set of priorities, Indiana. Proof once again that Indiana is the armpit of America. Have you seen the movie Idiocracy? Indiana was the location for the movie.

it's not just Indiana, it's across the board. this is from the boston globe about Pitino's new contract with Louisville :
"The new deal increases Pitino's annual salary from $1.65 million to $2.25 million beginning next season, and will pay him $2.5 million a year if he stays until the end of the contract. The contract also boosted a loyalty bonus due Pitino on July 1 from $1 million to $1.75 million. He'll receive loyalty bonuses of $3.6 million in 2010 and 2013 if he remains with the school."
this is what their AD thinks:
"He's worth every penny of it, probably double it," said Louisville athletic director Tom Jurich.

UK new coach gets $2.3 million

Looking at these figures IU got off cheap with a quality coach.

but even at mid majors its the same just smaller scale. I remember back in the early 90's at University of Tulsa Tubby Smith was the highest paid employee at $120,000 base.

I agree our priorities are screwed up, when athletic coaches are the highest paid employees at schools. but college athletics is a big business. And to attract the best talent you sometimes have to pay a lot to get it. It's unfortunate but thats just how it is today. wish they would focus more on academics and graduate their players and not just throw them to the side once the eligibility is up but so it goes.
oh and idiocracy wasn't Indiana, but could have been.

The university salaries are glaring proof why students are so deeply in debt when they graduate, yet everyone wants to jump on the "blame the student loan companies" bandwagon.

Cancer researchers, surgeons that save your life might be worth this amount but are we realy so nuts that a coach makss more than the University president, governor and mayor of Indianapolis combined??? But we do have great values these days - Paris Hilton still made more than coach.

Supply and demand. Lot's of kids go to college and that creates a large demand for teachers with a PhD. Furthermore, it takes a lot of money to get through graduate school and those professors have to repay it somehow.

When was the last time you saw 50,000 people show up to watch a professor to teach geometry?
