I'd be happy to be a Sheriff and earn
the $119,893.00 fee proposed in 2010.
That's more than I have ever made in the last 30 years.

Prime example of lobbiest/special intrest trying to keep an unjst system in place. Frank did not give up the funds on his own. He was afraid he would not get voted back in office as we don't need him at all with the consolidation. Is he for going the 50K salary increase also?

"Vern Tincher, D-Riley, said he was worried that the bill would take away the incentive sheriffs have to collect overdue state taxes."

THAT'S what he's worried about???! I want the sheriff to work on preventing violent crime, and pursuing violent criminals; not working as a tax collector!! For the career politicians, it's all about the tax money. They want every penny!

the general assembly should look at themselves in the mirror... you people have way to many perks and should be embarrased as to how much you rake in for a part time job...lets sell the statehouse or turn it into a museum and let the legislators meet at the holiday inn meeting rooms or primo's facilities. we could save a ton of cash... lets get rid of all the fat indiana and vote for people who promise change and change the old outdated way of doing things....

Indiana is still creeping at a snails pace into modern times. With the way we do business to benefit the few as opposed to the many, its no wonder we have the problems we do. Imagine in 2008, we are introducing and advancing a bill to limit Sheriff's fees. Next thing to come up will probably be moving that item out of job description and into tax assessor's role in each county.

Yeah, poor Frank. Though, it seems a minimal dose of Karma for the years we've suffered under his oft-absent leadership, media sound bites ("Oh! My flowers!") and a demeanor that looks more and more like senility every time he graces the television cameras with his mug.

THESE ARE SOME OF THE DOLLARS THAT ARE JUST BEING WASTED BY THE COUNTY AND STATE OF INDIANA.

WHY IS THE SHERIFF COLLECTING TAXES FOR THE STATE??

THE STATE HIRES MANY ATTORNEY'S, WHY CAN'T THEY EARN THEIR PAYCHECK FROM THE STATE AND COLLECT THE MONIES OWED TO THE STATE?

THIS IS WHAT IS WRONG, SPEND, SPEND, AND SPEND SOME MORE!!

That was a big secret to being a Sheriff for a long time. Term limits also applied to the position,,wonder why,,
Now lets see,, politician getting big $$ with term limits - maybe time for all political positions to be term limited.

How is he afraid of not getting re-elected? He can run for re-election next time around.

Actually, the sheriffs in Indiana are tax collectors. That is one of their required duties. Along with running the jail, serving court papers and courtroom security. Law enforcement is not one of their responsibilities. Sheriff's departments have done LE traditionally, but they are not required to do so.

If this doesn't pass it is time for the circus to get a new bunch of clowns.

All things in moderation, this is in excess and is WRONG. It likely wasn't wrong when put into place, but times have changed and it needs to be corrected yesterday!

Time for the general assembly to do what is right on this bill, and on property tax reform.

The sheriff isn't all that term limited. If he serves two consecutive terms he has to sit out one term and then can run again for two terms. In 20 years the same person could be sheriff for 16 years.
