"Sheriff Butch Baker said the road had been treated for ice "but had packed-down ice on it." "

Translation: The county threw down loads of salt before any sort of storm hit, so all the salt got blown off the road and didn't do a thing to prevent ice on the road.

Too bad these guys had to pay the price for it. Oh, and where are those yahoos that go on about seatbelts costing more lives than they save?

This is not the time to show any hostility towards anyone.. It is a time to comfort these teens family and friends..Placing blame on anyone at this point is mute since no-one can bring these lives back.. My heart goes out to all those that have been affected by this tragedy ... God Bless you all in your time of grief...

Amazing they were not wearing their seat belts, and had they been considering the over all damage their lives would not have been saved.

If you can do better for your county please step up and do it.

I was back home in New Castle this weekend and the teens actually had just left the Blue River Basketball game. It happened not far from the school. My sympathy to the parents and to all of the kids at BRV that will be dealing with this tragedy.

Lets not forget Billy Denton who died in a wreck just 2 years ago 1/30/2006. This has got to be hitting this school hard!

That stretch of road (SR 103) north of New Castle is a b!tch for an experienced driver, let alone a teenager with limited driving time. I've got two daughters, 9 & 7, and I dread when they or their friends get their licenses. I never understood why my parents got so uptight about me driving. Now I get it...

I don't know if the car's picture was in your paper, but their car actually slid under a semi trailer stored in a barnyard. I am a seatbelt proponent but probably wouldn't have mattered in this case. The road is a rough one at best; our county had a lot of "slush" on Friday morning that re-froze that evening in spite of best efforts. That cornfield had been flooded earlier on and was a solid sheet of ice. Please please please pray for peace for the parents and students; third serious (1st fatal) accident involving multiple students in our county in 3 weekends. And pray for the Denton family; lost Billy (classmate of Ms. Thompson) 2 years ago nearly to the day on the same road.

Agreed. A previous article somewhere mentioned the semi penetrated the car all the way to the headrests. Not much can be done there...

As others have mentioned, due to the nature of the impact, seat belts would not have been much of a factor in the outcome of this accident due to the car going under the semi trailer. This particular county road happens to run North and South which makes it even more vulnerable to blowing and drifting in the winter time. With the cold, wind and rain Henry County has experienced in the last few days, even the best efforts of the road crews aren't enough sometimes.

Prayers to the Families.

They say "only the good die young" in this case it is true. My heart and prayers go out to Todd, Lisa, Daniel, and Cory. Cherish the memories of Travis, you will relive them everyday for the rest of your lives.

um...could you BE any ruder? Go ahead and use 2 innocent teen's death as a way to market your over priced jewelery. Just for that, i hope no one buys ur jewelry. Your lack of sympathy will come back around to you one day, im sure of it.
