This is a sad story. Anyone like this woman who is dedicated enough to work two jobs is certainly qualified enough to earn more than minimum wage. I wish I had a job to offer. I wonder what she's doing for employment, because Taco Bell will pay almost twice the minimum wage.

I applaude this mother for her hard work and still dedication to her children. With so much negativity and stereotyping these days (homer), it is good to see a mother trying to get her children to be education members of society. It's a shame she has to be in such a neighborhood where her things get stolen.

I am sorry for this lady and I hope that people can help in whatever way they can. The story portrays her as a caring mother and a decent human being so I wish her family the best during the holidays and otherwise.

That said, where is the father? How as a 44 year old woman do you only have two part time jobs making minimum wage? I made more than minimum wage BEFORE I graduated high school! McDonalds pays more than minimum wage, as do most fast food restaurants. Why arenít you employed there? There are part time positions at a local retail chain that offer health insurance for people working more than 10 hours per week! How did you put yourself in the position raise two children with so little job skills and no father in the picture? THAT is the bigger question.

I applaud this woman for working two jobs. Unfortunately, she faces a life of such hard work.

To almost certainly avoid a life of poverty, follow these simple rules:

1) Graduate high school.
2) Don't have any children until after you are married. The best way to ensure this is to not have sex until you are married (it really can be done!).
3) Don't take any illegal drugs, ever.

People who have followed these three simple rules, and not suffered some form of disabling tragedy, are virtually absent from the list of people in poverty.

In response to the two idiots posting above (homer and santa): regardless how she ended up in this situation, you have to respect that she's working two jobs to support her family. There are single mothers in all walks of life (rich, poor, white, black) for whatever reasons. This woman is doing the right thing by busting her butt rather than depending on the system. Hopefully these kids will learn from watching their mother work hard.

Also, do not waste your hard earned dollars on cigarettes, liquor, or gaming. None of these is essential to your well being and will drain your resources quickly!

Why is she working 2 part time jobs? Why doesn't she go full time?

Starbucks, McDonalds, etc... they are all hiring for above the minimum wage with full time hours and benefits...

I hope that she makes ends meet.

HO-HO-HOMER! Why ask such a question?
Why ask why this story is in the newspaper? Would you want it to be if it were you? She never learned to fish, so let's throw her some fish. Why? She earned it! She got pregnant twice. CONGRADULATIONS!
You should learn how to spell before you start making fun of other people. Congratulations.

I agree as LONG as these rantings are posted when United Way features the next white woman in a similar position.

I, too, hope this lady continues making ends meet, but...I also hope she stops being satisfied with just making ends meet. She needs to figure out a way to get ahead in her life.

Because all of the illegal immigrants have all the full-time jobs to support their families.

Two minimum wage party time jobs? Why not a full time job at McDonalds or Wendy's where the pay is more than minimum wage? I wouldn't want to be in her situation, but I think I could manage to find a full time job making more money.

Why is asking where the father is stereotyping? It clearly states in the article that she is a single mother. There should be a father helping to raise these kids, either through direct involvement or child support
