Infractions committee chairman Thomas Yeager said Sampson's Oklahoma staff "rationalized the infractions as not important. While these may not be as notorious as some infractions the committee has seen in the past, they are important and produced the same objective, which was trying to induce recruits to attend the institution," Yeager said.

Yeager used unusually strong language to describe Sampson's conduct. Among the terms he used were "deliberate noncompliance" and "willful violations."
I have to admit, when this came up earlier, I didn’t think the “lack of institutional control” was even a possibility. However, given the fact that IU knew they hired a guy who was already on probation, it could happen. The NCAA was already very upset with Sampson and the If IU gets slapped with that, it will take years for the program to recover.

You act like alums and fans had something to do with the hiring of Sampson to begin with. I think he should be fired. The program will deal with this and still be better than Purdue. So DEAL with that.

Have you ever been to Mackey? Next time you go - look up and see if there's any national banners. At least we still have or legacy, no matter how much Greenspan and Sampson try to screw it up.

Welcome back to the iu Basketball Apprentice. In previous episodes we have fired Bob Knight, Mike Davis, and Rob Senderoff. Today we have Kelvin Sampson who has chosen Rick Greenspan and Jeff Meyer to bring back into the boardroom.

I can't find anyone here who is without fault so "YOU'RE ALL FIRED"

Good thing they got rid of Knight. Serves IU right, and know that Myles Brand is laughing since he used the PR to get a job at the NCAA. His posturing had nothing to do with caring about IU or the people of Indiana, or probably even college atheletics. He had an agenda and pushed it through. IU should fire this clown immediately and bring back someone from Knight's circle.

It is over with. Sampson should never be allowed to coach again. He has repeatedly displayed his lack of disrespect for his employers and his players. Get out Sampson!! Do the right thing and resign immediately.

I think this timing was a poor choice. NCAA COULD HAVE and SHOULD HAVE waited until the season was over. IU fans don't need this distraction, the players need to PLAY tonight without all this. Of course if they lose tonight they can blame it on this, wondering if their coach is going to be fired or if he resigns or whatever happens.

NCAA purposely close to bring this up during the season to distract the players.

To have the NCAA handing down judgement, now that's the pot calling the kettle black. Let's remember that, when Div I Football has to determine its "national champion", the idea of a tournament quickly escapes their conversations. And why...because there is a whole lot of money and deals rigged up in the current "<insert a company with a lot of $$$ name> <insert traditional bowl name> bowl" process. As unethical as the college bowl system is, funny, that won't ever change.
NCAA: be careful how you use the word "ethics". You shouldn't use words with which you are not very familiar.
If Sampson had been involved with getting one or more players money, or freebies, or their family members money, or freebies, I'd be all for maximum penalty for Sampson and Company. But phone calls...that's MAJOR? No...Michigan and its fab five treatment, now that was a major, major, major violation.
Food for thought: if the NCAA insists upon a focus on ethics, then how about every time I see a coach challenging any call he sees against his team, especially when the call was a real, legitimate call, that the coach is labeled unethical -and subject to sanctions? BETTER YET: how about a coach that sees a call that gives his/her team an unfair advantage, and doesn't storm on to the court to fix the wrong, is unethical and subject to sanctions?
How about every time the coach gets a technical foul that they are subject to sanctions? They ALL know the rules, technicals shouldn't ever happen unless ethics have been violated.
And on those notes, if we're going to toss that word "ethics" around like it's a children's toy, hate to break it to you, but I see ethics (in the pure sense) being violated in practically everyone sporting event that I have witnessed.
So Sampson is the only coach out there who ever misused a phone call privilege? How many of you misuse the phone call privilege you have at your workplace (personal call)? Or how many of you never exaggerated a number, say, for the purpose of a tax deduction? Better go turn yourself in, you unethical person...
I remember hearing that during the off season that Sampson spent time walking with DeAndre trying to help him work off some of that weight. Ahah...that could be construed as helping him lose weight for free, he didn't offer that to any other student, so let's go after Sampson on that one...

IU should be banned from the big dance this year not next while Sampson is still here. You can bet IU will be held just as responsible as Sampson. Death penalty like SMU football received a couple of years ago is possible? Don't bet against it. This is all the more troubling for the NCAA because for a couple of years Sampson was ahead of the Ethics Committee. That puts alot of egg on their face.

Hey, abiding dude, we get it. You think everyone cheats and lies. Get over it. Sampson is an idiot, he got caught and caught the 2nd time on probation for the same infraction. What do you expect? If you really are the age you say, didn't your parents teach you right from wrong, you sound like a Gen-Y slacker? I still don't agree, some people take pride in succeeding while running a clean program. Look back at the General- he never had a violation and I am pretty sure everyone was gunning for him to get him in trouble.
I do not support Kelvin lying to keep his gig. Fire him. I could care less. I just think phone calls are minor.

Look, Bobby Knight was no saint. I wish that everyone would get over that. Sure his players say that he was the greatest, but that is the group he helped. Ask Marty Simmions, Mike Giomi, Neil Reid.

I also knew an IU guy from Indy back along time ago and IU handed out perks to players. ALL schools do. Bobby did make guys go to class and graduate, I will give him that. I think that clouded the rest of the bullying and prima donna attitude.

My last point is that there is a lot more wrong with college athletics other than phone calls.

Contrary to belief at Bloomington, it is possible to have a coach who recruits well, wins games and sets a good example for players.

Bob Knight won, but his behavior was inexcusable. Mike Davis and Terry Hoeppner were generally decent guys, but Davis couldn't recruit and Hep couldn't win.(Too early to tell with Bill Lynch since he coached Hep's recruits last year.)

Sampson has demonstrated a pattern of recruiting violations, which have of course helped him win.

Is there anybody left like Dean Smith or John Wooden? I guess Matt Painter and Brad Stevens are winning the right way (as far as we know).

My feeling regarding the whole scenerio is this....IF my child was on Academic Probration at IU & received a non-passing grade, would they still be a student at IU? Let's not pick & choose when probation really means probation!!

Strong Sanctions against the coach should be imposed, not the basketball program as a whole. Take more of his salary, suspend him numerous games unpaid, but don't hurt the kids or University for the ramifications of an idiot coach who is full of himself.
Sorry, not the way it works. Look at Michigan. The Fab Five CHEATED and was busted and who got the penalty? Michigan voluntarily took down the championship banner from that year but the NCAA punished the current teams at that time that did not include one member of the Fab Five. Was that fair? I don't think so. Jalen Rose still flaunts their team as the greatest ever and doesn't seem to care that he cheated. Chris Webber is the same way. So, if Sampson gets hit, then IU goes down with him. IU did not have to hire the guy.
