As a teacher, this is definitely a good idea. I support it.

Good Grief !
Half these boneheads in public schools cant ever read diddly squat !
I had a girlfriend, who's 16 year old son was in his sophomore year at Manual High School,...and couldn't read,..
The school asked to mom to come in and talk,..I had to take her cause she is handicap and don't drive.
They told the mother that she should tell her son to "Get A Job" because he was failing school.
DUH !
No wonder he was failing, he can't READ !
The kid was accused of some dumb shit,..we had to go to court, the kid had proof, he wasn't even in school that day.
The mother talked to the judge, about the school telling us that the kid should get a job,..so the judge asked me if I was present, and what I had heard,...I told him exactly what happened, and they the school just wanted him out of the system, and that no one had made sure that "No Child Gets Left Behind" in his case.
The judge orders the school to place him under a tutor,...the kid comes home and tells us he is told to sit in a "Study Room" and keep quiet.
We went back to the school, went to the "Study Room",..and found it full of other kids that have the same problem as her son,...they were left in there with no supervision,...and no tutor.
When your kid is 16, and teachers keep passing him onto the next grade,...teachers are not doing their job.
I defense of teachers, I must say that all children should know how to read before they start school,...that means parents should take an active interest in their children's learning progress, before their stuck in a system that often lets some children slip through the cracks.
I'm just glad that myself, and my grown children never had a problem learning,...My kids have all won awards, and excelled in everything they do,....
Too bad my friends kid, and may others aren't that lucky :(
