I have been an effective voice in Washington, fighting for the needs of the Inland Empire as a financial services, transportation and infrastructure policy expert. As a Senior Policy Director for the 31st Congressional District, I have first-hand experience influencing national policy on behalf of our region. In my role, every second of my day was spent scrutinizing the impacts of proposals on our community, while politicians spent all of their time worrying about how to spin the gridlock in Washington. I took on the Washington bureaucracy and made it work for the Inland Empire.
As a national policy leader, I have crafted and advocated for robust fiscal measures that promote economic growth, job creation, responsible consumer protection, and strengthening our Nationís capital markets. I led initiatives in Washington that stabilized the Inland Empire housing market and reduced taxpayer losses for our region during the economic crisis.
I grew up in a family that puts hard work and education first. My mother, a retired elementary school teacher and professor at Cal State San Bernardino, dedicated her career to educating the next generation of leaders, educators, and producers. My father worked at the local telephone company for forty years. Generations of my family including my grandfather, father, stepfather, and father-in-law served our country in uniform. My husband Gary is a retired United States Army field artillery officer. Surrounded by a family of teachers, technicians and servicemen, I know the importance that a first rate education system and protecting American values has on strengthening American ingenuity and ensuring we are competitive in a global economy.
My first job was at a citrus fruit stand in Riverside selling oranges, stocking the shelves and managing a cash register. I worked my way through college in a grocery store bakery and as a cashier at Samís Club. In college, I served as an intern for the Clerk of the United States Supreme Court. I was then selected for a graduate fellowship at the Carl Albert Congressional Research and Studies Center at the University of Oklahoma where I earned a Ph.D. in Political Science with a focus in congressional studies, public policy, and public administration. My education taught me how Washington works, and I have dedicated my career to advocating for policies that will bring economic growth and prosperity to the Inland Empire.
I believe we must ensure America fosters the innovation and ingenuity of its people, and that the Inland Empire must once again be the best place to locate and grow a business. My husband and I are small business owners who know all-too-well the importance of reducing the burdensome regulations and taxes that are strangling businesses and hamper their ability to grow. As your Representative in Congress, I will put your priorities above the politics of Washington and advocate for solutions that make the Inland Empire the best place to work and raise a family.

From among ourselves
Why would candidate for Congress, Lesli Elaine McCollum Gooch, assume that the voters in the 31st District would be on board with surrendering this important seat directly over to Washington D.C. lobbyist control?
Gooch is a registered lobbyist from Washington, D.C. who has never lived or voted in our district. She claims that she has spent 15 years representing the residents of San Bernardino County in Washington D.C. but, Gary Miller was the representative and she was a staff office worker.
When Rep. Gary Miller quit, Gooch must have concluded that none of the 309,000 registered voters in the district are worthy or smart enough to select a new representative from among themselves. Just because Rep. Gary Miller surrendered to the lobbyists in Washington, does that mean we have to surrender also? No.
When a congressman quits his office, and a new congressman is elected, we are supposed to get a new start with a new representative and not just an insider staff worker from back east, committed to the same failed policies that are encouraged and paid for by the clients of aggressive lobbyists.
Infiltration into our Halls of Congress by revolving door lobbyists is a major assault on our liberty. There are five other candidates running besides this opportunist from the belt way. Isnít being able to choose our representatives from among ourselves one of the few and most important liberties we have left?
We should be able and indeed must, choose our next representative from among ourselves without this type of interference from Washington, D.C.
