I would go back to supporting IU if they hired Alford. I am a Knight fan and that's the ONLY way I would ever go back to IU.
We do not want you back. Support the school not the man. at this point I would love to leave IU behind and cheer for Purdue or Butler but my heart keeps bringing me back to IU eveb though my head says run away.

For those who think Alford can't coach may want to take a 2nd look. He has New Mexico at 19-6 after many said that a 500 season would be great this year. In addition, they beat Bob Knight's Texas Tech team by a score of 80-63.

Many who oppose Alford say he didn't produce at Iowa. His last four years at Iowa look like this:
Records for seas. conf.
20032004 Iowa 16-13 9-7 4th
20042005 Iowa 21-12 7-9 7th
20052006 Iowa 25-9 11-5 T-2nd
20062007 Iowa 17-14 9-7 T-4th
While, I don't see a first place Big 10 finish...it isn't as bad as many people say.

At Manchester he took a 4 win team and did the following:
Records for season/conference
19921993 Manchester 20-8 7-5 T-2nd
19931994 Manchester 23-4 10-2 1st
19941995 Manchester 31-1 12-0 1st NCAA D-III Runner-Up

So, I don't quite get it for all of those who say he can't coach. He keeps taking over programs that may not be traditional basketball schools and turning them into winners. More importantly, I don't see the negatives we now see at I. U.

Pat Knight was ridiculed for suggesting Alford. I think it might be a great thing for the Hoosiers. Imagine what he might do for a school in state that loves basketball and a university with a basketball tradition!

Pat's been a head coach 2 weeks and he wouldn't leave his guys hanging, like if Bobby had quit on the team. If Pat says to hire Alford, do it. Also consider Bob Huggins, he's a reformed cheater like Sampson said he was.

Things are going pretty well in Albuquerque right now, but, the thing about Alford is that his leadership falters when things get tough. He inherited great talent such as J.R. Giddens at UNM and has certainly capitalized there on the upswing of momentum--as a big-name hire and a Bob Knight protege, Lobo fans are ready to love him. But let's not crown him as savior just yet. I haven't seem him consistently developing the talent of his players over the course of a season, and I sure haven't seen him step up as a coach in the face of adversity the way I'd want for the Hoosier program.

I'm not trying to bash Steve Alford. I am cheering on the Lobos and hope he'll stay there with great success. But IU fans don't need to buy into the either/or drama of the Bob Knight story, as if the only option now is to anoint His Hairness.

What sage was it who said, "You're either with us, or you're against us"? Come on, folks, perhaps it's time we evolve.

Let's see: Dan Dakich was head coach at Bowling Green for ten years, compiling a record of 156-140 (.528). However, his teams' record over his final five seasons was 67-83 (.447) with only ONE winning season. His teams' league (MAC) record over the past five seasons was 34-54 (.386).
Alford has been a head coach for over 17 years with a record of 327-189 (.634) and only two losing seasons. In the past five seasons at Iowa, his record was 96-62 (.608) with NO losing seasons. His Iowa's teams' league (Big 10 -- definitely more competitive than the MAC) record was 43-37 (.538) over the past five seasons. The numbers do not lie when comparing the two coaches.
Really, then, is Dakich the more qualified candidate for the permanent Hoosier head coaching position? Which coach -- Alford or Dakich -- is a hotter commodity? Which candidate has greater name recognition (always important when recruiting) in Indiana and the Midwest, as well as nationally? In each case the answer is Alford.
Let's finally bring Steve back home!
Just wait a couple of years, NM will be glad to send him back. Just like Iowa was glad to see him leave, NM will too.

So now Pat Knight he won't leave his players hanging but encourages Steve Alford to leave his players hanging. Nice.

What great references...Isiah Thomas, the worst coach in the NBA; and the Pacers, the most notorious team in the NBA. And Steve Alford? A nice guy...a great college player...a mediocre coach. No thanks. The new coach is already there. Name Dakich the head coach now. Today. Don't put it off. Have him finish the season and do some evaluating along the way. Dut do it NOW. The sooner the better.

The same problem has existed at IU since the Bobby Knight era - the athletic administration. Although it is different people, things are the same ... ie Knight was allowed to be a "bad boy" because he was winning. When he stopped winning, he was gone. Like letting a kid cuss his parents for 10 years, then grounding him for it.

Same thing now - why did IU hire someone they knew had "baggage" - the athletic administration let the horse out of the barn, not the coach.

Have any of you idiotic IU fans ever realize that he really didn't have much to work with at Iowa! Not a hot bed of BB talent! I think he would be more paasionate about recruiting and coaching at his ALM. I was sadly mistaken thinking any of you new a damn thing about BB!

We even had a few idiotic Purdue fans wondering why we hired Matt Painter with hardly any coaching experience at PURDUE! Enough said!Coaching at your ALM, brings more passion about what you do!

all that was a Knight mafia message to Alford to stay away from the Indiana job or be disloyal to his dad holding the strings of that "cement footed" puppet in Lubbock.

Not only are you not a football school, but your stupidity is showing your not a BB school any more either! Remember sampson was the fourth guy on the totum pole when he was hired. No one wanted the job! Just like ND football, lardass Weiss was their fourth choice, no one wanted that job either! Your not a hot bed mecca of BB anymore!

As a hard core Purdue guy, I would wish, hope, and pray IU hires Steve Alford. Just ask Iowa for a reference.

Oh, if Steve is not available, IU should just jump all over another favorite son, Isiah Thomas. Ask Pacer nation for that reference.

Knight, Robert Montgomery, is a legend. NCAA championship as a player and 3 as a coach. Tenacious, intelligent, tough, passionate and fair with his players. Turned kids into men. He made IU a highly respected powerhouse in NCAA basketball. A self-appointed ethics guru ruined Knight's legacy at IU if we don't act. However, we can right a wrong and bring Knight back, or at least extend the offer - he may reject it, who could blame him. That's what the talking heads think he would do. On the other hand, I think he would consider it and, hopefully, take it. He deserves it and the last few years prove that. If not, put in a former IU player under Knight and rename Assembly Hall after Knight. Without that, IU is in sad shape. Look at Knight's record on and off the court - he delivered results. Never backed down and always did what he thought was right. Respect that people, none of us is perfect. At least he had and has the guts to stand up. Kelvin needs to go and without any severance payment. My opinion only, you Purdue graduates and fans, may disagree but I would say the same thing about Keady if he had been screwed by the suits.
