This has nothing to do with "higher standard of living" and everything to do with puritanical Christian fundies (check out Lori Baxter's organization's blog site at www.clayterrace.org ) who have too much free time, do a poor job of parenting and thus want society to parent for them.
As a Carmel parent of two girls, I am absolutely disgusted and ashamed that these Christian Taliban are giving the community I live in a bad name. I assure you that the high-tech and knowledge-based companies and entrepreneurs elsewhere in the country are reading this story and putting Indiana somewhere between Alabama and Mississippi on their list of places to expand into.

I think you missed my point. I was sarcastically remarking on how several posters have replied with "Carmel has a higher standard of living than Indianapolis", not someone's religious choice, but I will check out the site. Now I'm curious.

Guess where I'll be going tomorrow...gonna spend some money at VS!!!

Geez Ms Baxter, you need to wake up and smell the coffee. Rather than relying on ads and outside source to parent your kids, you need to grow up and start being the adult...teach your kids about sex. There's no way in h*** a mannequin will make kids want to have sex. It's obvious your parents didn't teach you about the "birds and the bees"...well, they must have because you have kids and you know where they came from.

There are much better things to complain or take stance on rather than bicker about a window display at VS.

What a lot of nonesense!

My aunt and uncle have lived in Carmel for some years. They are both decent, intelligent and deeply religious individuals and neither one was the least bit offended by the Victoria's Secret Display! The window showed nothing one hasn't been able to see in a SEAR's CATALOG for the past 50 years!

Are the noveau riche Carmelites so unwordly, prudish and ridiculous that they cannot tolerate the sight of a MANNEQUIN wearing a bra and panties?

There are so many serious and legitimate issues for people to be concerned about and this is the ludicrous stuff they waste their energy upon. No wonder the Indianapolis region is such a mess!

Time to spend less time worrying about bras and focus instead on crime, education, infrastructure, and the economy.

Glad to see the local Carmel Taliban is alive and well in America. I did not know that Baxter was the Carmel Moral Police. And shame on those mannequins making your children have sex at a younger age!!! And OH MY,pajamas appear to market to middle school-aged girls, who shouldn’t be exposed to the racy lingerie, Say Ms. Baxter, perhaps a nice Burkka for your daughter before we sell her into an arranged marrage?
And then there is the mannequins’ "suggestive” poses and the sagging pajama bottoms they wear, what are the voices saying to you? How about get a life and get to the Gym!!

For the people who thought the fundies would be appeased by Victoria's Secret dressing the mannequins with, say, pajamas -- the fundies can *never* be appeased until they control every aspect of your lives.
^So true. The country is against this concept in the war on terror and should be against it here at home as well.

Maybe you need to come back here and fight the fundies here for our freedoms!

I'm still trying to wrap my mind around the "My daughters were nice wholesome girls until they saw the Victoria's Secret display at which point they started banging the football team every Tuesday and Thursday" mentality. I wonder how incompetent of a parent one has to be to possess that cop-out mentality.

Wait a second. You mean after Lori Baxter gets the Victoria's Secret display censored *again*, as the first censorship was not good enough, her family will still have other corrupting influences in society? No way.

I'm going to help her out and list the next steps for Lori Baxter:

1) Ban Victoria's Secret show on TV.
2) Ban Victoria's Secret web-site on the Internet.
3) Ban the other 1000 lingerie web-sites on the Internet.
4) Ban the 500,000 porn web-sites on the Internet.
5) Ban all R-rated movies on TV.
6) Ban all R-rated movies at Blockbuster's, Hollywood Video, etc.
7) Import burqas from Afghanistan for all women in the US.
8) Release the morality police to enforce all of the above.

Looks like Lori Baxter is going to have a very busy couple of weeks here.

How about we raise a fuss over all the churches in the news for people molesting kids? Maybe the govt should step in and close them? Oh, that is right, youo only want govt to be there when it benifits you, not the real innocent children.

Thanks to Carmel for having the good moral values and taking action against this immoral Company. If more people in our community would speak up we could rid ourselves of the like. I say television needs to clean up there act also. Believe me Victoria Secrets belongs in the toilet!

Whyare your rights more important then anyone elses? I do not believe you are the majority. As usual you are the minority but you are going to make a stink to get your way. Why not tackle real issues like church elders and staff grabbing and molesting children? Rather then making everyone conform to your ways try being a parent and teaching kids instead of trying to shelter them from the real world. The schools have kids dressing far sexier then the window display had. Wake up to the real world. Not everything is Rose covered and lollipops!

As you said, you are the minority! If youo want this magical place go build it where you are the majority. The world does nto revolve around you. People are free to make choices. Let's look at all the holier then thee churches with kids getting molested? Is that not a bigger issue? Or is it what goes on in your world is no ones business, but you have the right? to make the choice for everyone else? Why are youj not down at the mall or the local school telling the kids to dress better? Is a human dressed sexy not worse then a plastic doll? Do you not let youor kids see TV or read the ads in the paper? What about all the stores that sell the same thing but just do not have them in the window? Now what about the liquor stores. Did Jesus not, according to the Bible, change the water to wine? So it is okay for that ut not okay for some one else to drink? What about at church when you take communion, is it not wine? Where does this come from if not a liquor store? Join the real world and teach your kids. Do not expect everyone else in the world to teach your kids. It is your job!

Lori, I applaud your efforts. It's tough to stand up for what you know is right when it's the minority and you face criticism of folks who go through life uninformed and naive. This is about education. The parents and religious leaders of Hamilton County have spoken, and we're just getting warmed up. There are also efforts to cover the sexually suggestive magazines in grocery checkout aisles and move the cigarette displays (which have conveniently been adjusted to the eye-levels of children, if you haven't noticed). The atheist Compass movie is next, and we're not done with Victoria's Secret. You create your community how you like it -- those porn shops and liquor stores are just so impressive down in Marion County -- and we'll create ours how we like it.

How is the mall in the school zone? Why should they put it in the back? Because you do not want to have to explain something to your kids? Try being a parent and teaching your kids. It is not my job to teach your kids. If you do not teach them right from wrong and about morals they will learn it at school from some other kid.
Hoosier East wrote:
I agree with this mother. It's no secret what Victoria's Secret sells, so it shouldn't be a hardship on the company to put something slightly more conservative in the window. I wouldn't call VS "immoral" as one post claimed, except for their marketing to the middle school set, which I believe they've clearly acknowledged before. Underwear and lingerie are not evil and they have their place -- just maybe not so prominently in the window. Though, I might add, they often have print materials in the window much racier than the mannequin. It's an issue of taste. Put the conservative stuff more toward the front so parents have less explaining to do for their young children, and keep the racier fare further back. That way shoppers can decide for themselves how much they do or don't want to see.

If the parents were there teaching the kids this would not happen. It is not a pictures fault the kids do these things. It is a lack of parenting. It is not the communities job to teach your kids morals, it is not the schools job, it is your job to teach your kids. Quit blaming everyone else for someones lack of parenting!
Not so quick to disagree wrote:
I don't know. I saw some posters hanging up in VS at Castleton a while back and I was pretty appalled. The thing is, no one wants anyone to "spoil their fun" but no one wants to discuss how our highly sexualized culture leads to (sure there are other factors, but this is definitely one of them) thousands of children being born out of wedlock and to kids growing up being inundated with images that tell them sex is fine, as long as you're "safe." No one wants to talk about (or even admit that it exists) the loneliness and depression that is fueled by youngsters having sex waaaayyy too soon. Wasn't it some young girls - 11 or 12 years old - in Carmel who were recently caught sending naked pictures of themselves to boys? And this is okay? Oh, but it has NOTHING to do with the images they see around them via TV, print, etc. Give me a break.
Moral choices affect psychological/mental health. Period.
