State police head pushes legalizing pot

The head of the Indiana State Police is telling lawmakers he would legalize and tax marijuana if it were up to him.

State police Superintendent Paul Whitesell told members of the State Budget Committee on Tuesday that he had followed the issue during 40 years in law enforcement and believed "it is here, it's going to stay."

He cited votes in Colorado and Oregon allowing adults to have small amounts of marijuana as evidence of a national shift on the issue.

His answer came in response to a question from Democratic Rep. Sheila Klinker about pending proposals to decriminalize small amounts of the drug.

Democratic Sen. Karen Tallian has proposed decriminalizing marijuana and Republican Sen. Brent Steele said he would consider a similar measure during the upcoming legislative session.

A spokesman for Indiana State Police released a statement stressing that Whitesell's comments were strictly philosophical and did not reflect support for legalization of the drug.

"His comments were of a philosophical perspective and not the substance of a rendered official opinion," the statement read. "Although the Superintendent personally understands the theoretical argument for taxation and legalization, as a police officer with over 40 years of experience he does not support the legalization of marijuana."

Governor-elect Mike Pence's office also issued a statement on the matter.

"Gov.-elect Pence opposes the decriminalization of marijuana, and he will base his decisions about the leadership of his administration on a broad range of qualifications rather than a stance on one issue," said Christy Denault, Pence's communications director. http://m.theindychannel.com/w/news-top/story/...

I have a huge stash of seeds and a superb green thumb that say differently.....

I can make it so that it will only cost me the price of a 1/2 bag of cow manure and a few hundred gallons of water at 3 cents a gallon.

He advertised iphone/ipad repair services on Ebay. The apple products were shipped to him and he never sent them back. He has done this to at least a dozen people and the police will do nothing.

He advertised iphone/ipad repair services on Ebay. he did not fix the items. H did not return them to the owners. He did this to more than a dozen people. So, do not buy apple products from this guy. They may be stolen.

Trouble is they are not talking at this time of making it legal. Only talking about lowering the price if you get caught. You would be charge the same if it passes on growing. Now, if they completely legalize it where you could grow your own, there would be less crime dealing with pot.

Sounds like something he would do. How many Jason Leavers could there be in Indiana? Probably the same one. Works at local hospitals in Indiana and treats people (patients) terrible, because he can. He thinks he is God. Has many kids, not married to the mothers of them, so he probably has to be a shyster just to pay child support.

If they lower the cost of the fines related to possessing small amounts (say, under 1/2oz), it's 'decriminalization'. They do this in Massachusetts. The less it 'costs' to possess it, the fewer criminals you will have sitting in jail over it (when most of them could be out working for a living and paying taxes! gasp, what a concept!). Of course, that would mean a few rookie LEOs and PO's will get their work loads shifted around a little, perhaps a few layoffs, BUT WE CAN'T HAVE THAT, CAN WE? as if we couldn't find SOMETHING for them to do.

No, this state will never legalize cannabis. As Hilary Clinton liked to say back in January of 2011 down in South America: "There's too much money in it for it to be legalized." (it was refreshing to actually read that a politician finally lost control of their mouths and admitted the obvious - but that's another story).

Without the scenic splendors, that other states enjoy; and with only the Indy 500, various conventions, and a once in a blue moon Super Bowl; you would think this state would be one of the first to clamor for legalization in order to reap the tax windfall.
But no........
They only want to keep the flow of fed dollars coming in for the maximum number of prisoners held by the DOC; most for non-violent drug crimes.

He was at Community East, but was fired. Not sure where he is now. Check Methodist, Wishard, etc. Hopefully his nursing license was stripped from him.

If it's true that his father got sick and he got behind in his work. Let's hope NO ONE treated his father the way he treated his patients at Community. That was a crime and nothing was done about it.

What will the Legal-Corectional Complex do if pot is legalized? Where will it get a new source of raw material to process through its mega money-making operation? Maybe if texting were made illegal, it could find plenty of new raw material from that universe of "criminals."
