IITD was established in 1963. After that only two more IITs (IITG and IIT-R) saw the light of the day. Of these only IITG was a green-field IIT established 31 year later in 1994 that too as a part of the agreement between ASSU agitators and the central govt. Now all on a sudden MHRD came up with a "Hat Trick" by unilaterally announcing establishment of 8 new IITs. It did not give any thought about the infrastructure and faculty hiring. The policy makers who may have advised MHRD are simply toeing the govt line without realizing the difficulties. The existing IITs are given mentoring job of new IITs. This means each new IIT will inherit the baggage from its mentor. These IITs will not be able to provide any refreshing approach to upgrade brand equity called "IIT". This simply amounts to killing the brand.
