Berhampur city has a population of 7 lakhs and is considered as the business capital of Orissa. Berhampur is not only the regional headquarter of South Orissa but also it the biggest city of the region. With University, Medical College and 10 engineering colleges it is a hub for higher education. There is Gopalpur Port, IRE, Titanium Plant, proposed TATA SEZ near the city. Recently efforts have begun to attract IT companies to Berhampur as the STPI at Berhampur has started functioning. But, sadly the state and central govt are not showing any interest for a domestic airport at Berhampur. A Flight training Institute at Berhampur is going to start soon by the AAI. Also, Berhampur has radar traffic control system by AAI, which are only available in big airports. So, efforts must start to build a domestic airport at Berhampur and it should be named after the worth son of Berhampur Shri VV Giri who went on to become the Fourth President of Republic of India. The natives of Berhampur must start campaigning for VV Giri Airport at Berhampur.

Indeed the proposal of Himanshu is very much correct. As seen the Gopalpur ship port which has historical background is very much neglected and since last 15years promises are only given and unfortunate to beleive proper action has not been given. So also the Rangailunda Airstrip has all required sarroundings with millitary facilityhas not so far upgraded to a domastic airport. The proposed TATA STEEL Plant at Gopalpur Chatrapur Berhampur belt has been delayed even after acquiring 3700 acres of land in 1995-96 and Govt of india is likely to declered as SEZ but no action by the TATA STEEL or Govt of Orissa. Itis very funny that Govt is totally mum.How the Orissa Govt could acquired again 3170 acres at KALINGANAGAR in 2004 infavour of TATA STEEL through IDCO but facing problems daily.Inspite of having all required facility Railway,NH5,Seaport and Airport and open acquired land in hand but no action has been tasken to implement the project. The silk production has almost stoped. The SILK CITY has become SICK CITY. The people of Berhampur tobe unitedly fight and press on the local leaders ignoring party politics. Ramesh Nayak Berhampur camp USA

Shri Ramesh Nayak, it is great that you still raise issues of Berhampur staying abroad but as a son of the soil it will be really wonderful if senior and intellectual people like you stay in Berhampur and shape its development. Not only this invite NRIs and investors to come to Berhampur and invest in IT, BPO, Construction, Retail, Hotel industries here. Though Berhampur city is not as much developed as USA, but efforts of people like yours can only make it a developed city.

The idea of VV Giri airport at Berhampur must be considered by the government. Afterall Berhampur is the birth place of Bharat Ratna Dr VV Giri and the city needs an airport. What the Orissa Govt has done in memory of VV Giri?? This is the reason why AP is saying VV Giri is from Andhra. But, when half of the population of South Orissa is Telugu speaking how can one say that he is from AP. Now some people say VV Giri fought MP election from AP so he is from Andhra. In that case Shri PV Narasimha Rao was also the MP from Berhampur. So, can we say that PV Narasimha Rao was a Berhampuri and from orissa? VV Giri was not only born in Berhampur but he did his schooling and college from Berhampur. He has his ancestral house is in Berhampur. So, an airport named after VV Giri will be timely.

It is really nice to see your inputs on the same. Since my child hood i have been seeing and listening that there will be bright future for gopal pur on sea SEZ and Berhampur as well. Nothing has happend so far. What ever things we have discussed so far if that would have happened in reality then there will be a great relief for GANJAM people in terms of employment. It is known to everyone that peopleís of GANJAM dist are depending on other states like AP, Maharastra and Tamilnadu for their livelihoods. This is really shame to our political leaders those who are elected from these constituency and doing nothing for them.
We need to ensure from our end that at least one person from each family should avail benefits from these developments and need to stop migration to other states and the same time minimum infrastructure should be provided in terms of health, drinking water and primary education.
Letís not discuss the upcoming projects in pen and paper or internet. When it would happen in reality and peoples will start getting benefits out of it?

lolz....
VV Giri house is located near to GIRI road only...adjacent to some former tutorials house..
thing that made me burst into laughter is how can you claim he is proud son of the soil.... he has never showed his face after he left berhampur...and claiming BAM needs an airport , it is foolish to think , as it is impossible to construct [unless it is very crucial] within radius 300km of another airport, and in that case we have 2 airport . BBSR , VSK...
Anyways BAM population in 11 lakh excluding 5 lakh+ immigrants who stay in surat...
Check google .. BAM is one of the highest AIDS affected cities of the country...
we had chau pttnk,MLA multiple times but no ministry so far...what does it suggest ..HE IS AN HINJRA...
Even naveen pttnk , fighting election from katu..what he did so far...another HINJRA..
Beg your pardon, BAM has produced HINJRAS so far "proud son of soil" post is vacant.

Sorry my people i am not so harsh, but do forgive as NOM , i typed it out of emotions...

What has Naveen Patnaik done for Berhampur or Ganjam in the last 12 years of his rule? They have only shown dreams to people and have done nothing for infrastructure development of Berhampur city.

Kerala is planning for its 4th International airport at Kannur (a town with a population of 60,000) and we in Orissa are happy with our PAKHALA bowl and can't dream of a second airport outside the capital at Berhampur.

A lesser developed state like Madhya Pradesh has five fiunctioning airports at Bhopal, Indore, Jabbalpur, Gwalior, Khajuraho and what to talk about developed states like Gujarat, Karnataka or Tamil Nadu.

Orissa Government led by Naveen Patnaik is severly neglecting Berhampur and if they don't change this approach then they will have to severly pay for this.

Naveen Patnaik Govt has done nothing for infrastructure development of Berhampur or Ganjam. Berhampur has potential to grow but the state govt. is direction-less and has no vision for development.

i have seen quite a longtime that berhampur is going to have airport but till now it is only a rumor. now the time has changed and all types of facility available in berhampur like.. hospitals, colleges, unversity, most of engineering colleges and also berhampur is one of the oldest and commercial city of orissa. it is very difficult to reach there most of the tourist comes to gopalpur and immigrants coming from different part of india so it is the time to give a proposal of airport at berhampur. i couldn't understand how people will travel with a single airport or will have to travel around 200 to 300 km from bbsr or viz. so in terms of business and revenue is concern also for the convenience for the people we have to raise our voice to have an airport at BERHAMPUR (WHAT EVER THE NAME OF THE AIRPORT) BUT FOR SURE IT GIVES US MORE PLEASURE/VALUE& COMFORT.

Mr Panda. What the f**** hell are U taking about. "There cant be airport with in 300 km radius."

Do you know the distance from Surat to Baroda 110 kms. & there are airports at Surat as well as Baroda.

Other exapmles are mumbai - Pune, Baroda - Ahmedabad etc... so why not Bhubaneswar - Berhampur. because it is in orissa and no body (gandhi family) cares about orissa. Orissa has always been neglected , don't know why ???
There can be definitely be a airport (if we have enough passengers and enough space to construct an airport)

Dear Friends,

Let us learn something from Narendra MODI. Gujarat is growing prosperously. Take a note of cities like Rajkot, Bhavnagar, Ahmedabad. All the industrialist are putting up big projects in Gujarat. People economically prosperous. In one of the meeting their CM assured people from remote areas will get more facilities and they need migrate to bigger cities like Ahmedabad, Rajkot etc. And he has done it.

We are very sorry to state that we do not have that political will. Be it any field we are lagging behind. Some of the influential persons were laughing at me when I was suggesting for an airport in Berhampur.

It is shame to say that people are migrating to different states and are staying as a second class citizens.

On the behalf of the citizens of Berhampur I pray our political leaders to immediately step up and take up the matter with Central leadership and immediately start the Airport Project for Berhampur.

Dear Sir, don't pray any body... if possible, do some thing. at least you can help the student organisation 'SOSA' New Delhi, in their struggle. I know a bunch of students from your city and south Orissa (I don't belong to Orissa)are relentlessly and silently fighting their lonely battle for the development of their mother land(South Orissa). What ever you are seeing on the ground today relating to the development of Berhampur or South Orissa (a demand for IIT, IIIT, an Airport, STPI, engineering college, CU, Central Institutions or what ever) are the achievements of these people. do salute them and join with them. It will change your world...

(THE HINDU)

Students' association demands domestic airport near Berhampur
Naveen Patniak urged to take up the issue with Civil Aviation Ministry

BERHAMPUR: The South Orissa Students' Association (SOSA) has sent a memorandum to Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik urging him to take up the matter regarding establishment of a domestic airport near Berhampur with the Civil Aviation Ministry. The association feels the recent growth in aviation sector seems to have bypassed Orissa although it is on the fast track of industrial development. In comparison to other states like Gujarat and Maharashtra, Orissa lacks proper air connectivity.
At a time when other states have multiple functional airports, Orissa still depends on the airport in the State capital Bhubaneswar, which is it the only domestic airport. The SOSA activists feel establishment of a domestic airport in Berhampur can serve as a major catalyst for development of ten districts of south Orissa..........

(THE ODISHA DIARY)

Demand for Greenfield Domestic Airport at Orissaís Berhampur
Monday, November 08, 2010

Berhampur: The spectacular growth in the aviation sector witnessed in India in recent years has completely by-passed the state of Odisha. Odisha has seen a spurt in private investment in the recent years and now it is being compared with some of the more advanced states like Maharashtra, Gujarat etc in terms of attracting investment.
But, when it comes to air connectivity the state is considered a laggard with poor and inadequate aviation infrastructure. At a time when most of the states have developed multiple functional airports, the State of Odisha still doesnít have a second airport after Bhubaneswar.
While the only airport of Odisha is still languishing as a domestic airport, prominent cities of the State like Berhampur are yet to be a part of the aviation map of the country. This is regrettable as Berhampur city caters to a vast population of South Odisha and is a major educational, healthcare and commercial hub of the state. This has not only created impediments for balanced development of the state, but has discouraged potential investors, especially in the IT & ITES sector, tourists and even people of Odisha staying in various parts of the world who can contribute immensely towards development of the state. In coming years demands for air traffic in Odisha are expected to grow exponentially and the only airport at Bhubaneswar may not be able to meet the demand of the entire state..........
