Rape is the fastest growing crime in India. Every hour Indian women face two rapes, two kidnappings, four molestations and seven incidents of cruelty from husbands and relatives [National Crime Records Bureau Report 2006]

Incest

Delhi based organisation RAHI said 76% of respondents to its survey had been abused when they were children – 40% of those by a family member. 4% were abused by their own fathers or brothers.

Prostitution

Out of the 593 districts in India, 378 or 62.5 % are affected by human trafficking. In 2006, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) sponsored study conducted by Shakti Vahini, found that domestic violence, illiteracy, unemployment, poverty; unsafe migration and child marriage are the major reasons for the increasing rate of illegal human trafficking.

95 % of the women in Madhya Pradesh in commercial sex are due to family traditions. So are 51.79 % in Bihar,’ said the study. While 43 % of the total women trafficked are minors, 44 percent of the women are into flesh trade due to poverty. Of the total women who are into sex work in the country, 60 % are from the lower and backward class, which indicates the pathetic living condition of the communities. In Madhya Pradesh, a political bastion of Hindu right wing party, 96.7 % of the women sex workers are from the scheduled castes and scheduled tribes.

India has 4 million prostitutes nationwide and 60% of the prostitutes are from the Scheduled Castes and Tribes or other backward caste. UNAIDS says over 38% of those living with HIV in India are women.

The year 2008, reported more than 20,000 rapes (and estimates say only about one in 69 cases is reported in India). In a staggering 92 per cent of the cases, the perpetrators were known to the victim. One of the worst places for a woman to live in, in terms of personal safety and security, India records 57 rape cases per day, up by 800 per cent if one considers the seven per day recorded in 1971. This is excluding the several others that are muffled or pushed under the carpet for reasons of ‘honour’ and ‘family name’. Rape is present as at least one of every four crimes recorded in India. Every hour, there are at least 20 crimes committed against women across the country. And out of all rape cases, only about 20 per cent actually see conviction for the offenders.
According to 2008 statistics, out of 35 cities checked for women’s security, national as well as rape capital Delhi stood first, with an incredible one-third of total rapes happening here. If the capital of the country and one of its biggest cities does not guarantee safety, what will? And to think that these are estimates that don’t even reveal the whole truth. If one were to have the ‘real’ figures in hand, one would realise that there is indeed truth in the claim that rape is India’s biggest crime at the moment.

A report produced by the BBC a decade ago had opined citing research sources that Close-knit family life in India masks an alarming amount of sexual abuse of children and teenage girls by family members. It said that that disbelief, denial and cover-up to preserve the family reputation is often put before the individual child and its abuse. A report from RAHI, a Delhi based NGO working with child sexual abuse titled “ Voices from the Silent Zone,” suggests that nearly three-quarters of upper and middle class Indian women are abused by a family member – more than often an uncle, a cousin or an elder brother.

Well of course I remind people that I grew up in Australia not India.

Whatever statistics SA is quoting relates to Indian regional tribal traditions (particlarly in states like Mahdya Pradesh and Bihar) that pre-date civilisation in India. India is like an onion and the majority of the rural population are direct descendants of indigenous tribals who have certain so called "primitive traditions", coupled to this is this group contributes most (99%) of the poverty of India.

India's urban, land owning and merchant populations represent the upper layer of that onion representing language groups who moved into India in the last 5000 years. Statistics relating to child abuse, violence and hygiene etc do not apply to these people. Middle-upper class Indians represent the top 33%- they speak different dialects/languages, dress differently, are educated, mostly vegitiarian, mostly religious. This layer or strata of Indian society is invisible to outsiders who see us as homogenous - this is far from the truth.

Upper-middle class urban Indians enjoy good living conditions, freedom of education for women, hygiene health...etc etc...As I have said they also represent the doctors, lawyers engineers, dentists and other professionals in Australia. We (as a group) know who we are and what we represent. All this criticism and snide remarks relating to Indian poverty, abuse etc....does not apply to us- it washes of like water of a duck's back.

Finally I and other midle class Australian Indian citizens are not responsible for the poverty in rural masses and their presence in urban slums (such as in Mumbai and Calcutta). We are as far removed from these social ills as they are for the white folks.

Australian man fathers child with daughter

An Australian man and his adult daughter went public about their incestuous relationship after having a baby together, as it emerged that a previous child of the couple died a few days after birth.

John Deaves, 61, and his daughter Jenny, 39, have a 9-month-old daughter but have been banned from having sex after a court convicted the pair on two counts of incest.

“The couple are being monitored by the relevant authorities,” a South Australia state police spokesman told Reuters today.

The case provoked international media attention when the couple appeared on Australia’s 60 Minutes programme to explain their relationship, which began when the two were re-united eight years ago.

John Deaves left the family home when his daughter was one-year-old and did not see her again for 30 years. When they were reunited, she had already married and had two children.

But within weeks, the couple had started a sexual relationship.

“We’re normal intellectual adults who have had careers, had a normal life like everybody else but fallen in love with each other when we are biologically related,” Ms Deaves told the Nine network.

“We are just asking for a little bit of respect and understanding.”

The couple’s nine-month-old daughter, Celeste, was also on the programme and appeared to be healthy.

But the Australian Associated Press said on Monday that court documents showed they had another child in 2001 who died from congenital heart problems.

John Deaves, who is 61, said he knew it was illegal to have sex with his child but emotions soon overcame him.

“Emotions take over, as people no doubt realise, there are times during your life where emotions do rule the heart, it rules the head,” he said.

“I knew it was illegal, of course I knew it was illegal but you know, so what."

The South Australian couple, who bear a striking resemblance to each other, were both placed on three-year good behaviour bonds on March 20 after being convicted of two counts of incest each, a spokeswoman for the South Australian Courts Administration Authority said.

Report: Man fathered 4 kids with daughter
Australian arrested for raping daughter over 30 years, newspaper says

MELBOURNE, Australia - An Australian man has been arrested on charges of raping his daughter for 30 years and fathering four children with her, a newspaper reported Thursday.

The exclusive report by the Herald Sun newspaper said the man began raping his daughter in the 1970s when she was 11 years old, threatening her with violence against her mother. He was arrested in February after the woman approached police, the report said.

Victoria state police would not immediately confirm the newspaper's details, saying a court suppression order was in place.

Compared to Austrian case
The daughter first told police about the alleged abuse in 2005, but no charges were laid as she said she feared for her safety and would not cooperate with police, the report said.

The newspaper compared the case to that of Austria's notorious Josef Fritzl, the man who was convicted earlier this year of imprisoning and repeatedly raping his daughter for 24 years, fathering seven children with her.

i was at a supermarket in melbourne recently and near 4 indian students. as they went through the checkout with a white checkout girl one of them made a rude remark with a sexual connotation towards this women who looked offended.
