Harden up boys.
Every wonder why Australia never takes us seriously. Now you know!
What next, we gonna teach the Aussies first aid. Maybe in return they will teach us how to actually be soldiers and men and to fire a rifle and not just put on bandages.

All you have to do is look through our history New Zealanders have no problem being soldiers and knowing how to shoot you needn,t worry our soldiers are well trained in firing there weapons look at our SAS do you think they need training in firing there weapons.

Being as tough as you are maybe you should pay all the New Zealand army bases a visit and you can show them how it,s done.

Our SAS are well respected in the world of Special forces and that is why they were requested by the U.S in Afganistan and that is why they got a unit commendation for there efforts from George Bush to go along with Willie Apiatas VC and you should remember that the SAS get there members from the military that you think is a joke and again if you think they are pussies go to the SAS base and tell them so.

As for giving first aid you can be sure if you ever find yourself facing death and your only hope of survival is a New Zealand soldier giving you first aid you won,t be calling that person a joke.

Our soldiers are fully trained for combat doing three months basic training then going on to advanced infantry training they are schooled in close in country fighting and urban combat amoung other things and if they are called to go into combat they will step up like they always have.

In East Timor in 1999 when our guys were sent in after Leonard Manning was shot our soldiers had other engagments and the enemy were despatched smartly rest assured our guys know how to shoot and the Australians had no problem with the performance of our soldiers.

Fact 1: The article reads like a joke.

Fact 2: New Zealand's defense forces have long been underfunded and generally neglected to a point where, with just a few exceptions, they ARE a joke.

Our military personnal are well trained and know there jobs our infantry are as well trained as any light infantry in the world and they recieved funding for new equipment under the last government and our ground forces will have equipment comparable to there counter parts from other countries.

An army being small doesn,t make it a joke and all the people in that army are prepared to put themselves in harms way if the call comes while a lot of other people are sitting in there armchairs and they deserve more respect.

No army dictates foreign policy unless it was a general of said army that led the coup. IE Fiji. As everyone also knows.
What is fact is the NZ Army is not a fighting force but rather a highly trained first aid, medical, patch up the wounded force. Which makes them a joke. The NZ Army takes political correctness to such limits its actually nauseating. No doubts that the boys are well trained and car shhot a gun streight, its how their commanders are forced to use then that makes them a joke

I met the NZ Army boys in Iraq and they made it quite clear to me when we had a beer together that they where frustrated becuase all the ever did was menial tasks and practiced a lot of first aid and rescue scenarios. They themselves told me that they where a joke in the eyes of other countries military personnel
Try getting your information from the guys actually in the army and not from the recruitment web site unless you are a army recruiter yourself, which would actually make sense then. And dont bother speaking to the army boys here in NZ that have never left the countries shores. They only know first aid.

I don't think that I need to provide you with examples and they are there and they are everywhere.
Its the same if you asked me to give you examples of the sun rising every morning. Open your eyes and ye shall see. Or is it case of there are non so blind and those who do not wish to see.

Perhaps you are speaking with the wrong guys. You need to get down to grass roots level mate.
Not the officers who sip tea and ask for examples before they actually acknowledge that there is a problem but the boys who are in the front lines the soldiers trained as first aiders. Go have a chat with them, as I said before, talk to the boys who have actually done a tour in another country, not your typical weekend wannabe who goes on camps and calls himself a soldiers.

I cannot tell you where I was in Iraq exactly, except to say that I spent most of my time in the central and south western region and was a guest of at a lot of coalition camps. I met a lot of soldiers and mercenaries from a lot of countries. NZ included.

Reality is NZ can never have enough resources to fund a military (personnel and equipment) that could be considered formidable by international measure. I do believe the government may well be correct in utilising the military in nothing other than a low key, support role. Our best bet is to stay well on side with those that CAN assist us if national security were threatened. And help out our allies as and when required.

The key to all of this, though, is to not kid ourselves into believing our forces are "up there" in terms of fighting forces. A bit like the recruitment commercials....just like a video jacket - all dressed up with the good bits, and then the actual movie contains little else and even that's boring as hell! This is where the joke part comes from...it just ain't what we're led to believe in the propaganda.

There is no reason we can,t equip our army with up to date equipment and we are doing it i mean look at the Steyr rifle it is as good as anything around at the moment and they are upgrading them with snipers barrels and the ability to use other telescopic sights the army is also replacing the C9 5.56mm belt fed machine guns which are worn out bt as good as anything going we also use 7.62mm belt feds that are the same as all western armies use and one of the most reliable in the world.

Our 81mm mortars are equal to what other countries use in that caliber we use the browning .50 heavy machine gun which is standard for all western militaries.

The Carl Gustav 84mm unguided shoulder launched rocket is up with the best in the world and we have it and are upgrading the sights so they can be used more accuratley at night and we also purchased the Javlin which is the best guided anti tank weapon system in the world.

There are a lot of weapons purchases happening for the army and our weapons are not clapped out or inferior to other armies.

Our soldiers are not just trained in first aid as jolly keeps stating they are well trained as infantry actually recieving training as good as any light infantry in the world doing 3 months basic training then on to do something like another 6 months advanced infantry training and they also now do courses in urban combat and close in country fighting.

We are alays going to have a small army but that doesn,t mean we can,t have an army of well trained personnal who can handle themselves well.

As for our soldiers being involved in direct combat roles that is decided by our political leaders not the army and when you consider we had Helen Clark in charge who stated the the thought of armed conflict makes he sick and now has a job at the U.N it is not suprising that our army has not be used in direct combat.
