For the largest city in either of the Dakotas (population 124,000), I've been shocked at how many flights there are in and out of Sioux Falls. The last time I flew to Sioux Falls on pre-bankruptcy Northwest Airlines, they must have been losing money hand-over-fist. The flight came from Detroit to Minneapolis, then here to Sioux Falls. It was a NEARLY EMPTY Airbus.

Senator Thune should stop the polical grandstanding so that they airlines don't take too hard of a look at how much money they really make (or DON'T) by serving Sioux Falls !

I can solve your problem senator. Move to Omaha or Mpls. Why is it the airlines problem to fly to a small market and lose money? People in Sioux Falls made their choice to live where they live. Get a life.

I live in Sioux Falls and the population was just announced at 170,000....almost eveyone I know that plans to fly in this area does exactly what Thune says. I say keep it the way it is....less air traffic the better.

Dear Sioux Falls,
I remember when your Chamber of Commerce would buy time on Twin Cities radio stations telling us why we should all move our businesses out of the crummy Minnesota business climate. Now you want better airline service and lower fares? I thought Sioux Falls was already a businessman's paradise. Are the airlines supposed to take you on as a charity case? Why don't some of your happy Sioux Falls Businessmen put up their money and start their own airline? Better yet, you could run some radio ads in Chicago and maybe United would move to Sioux Falls. Those Chicgo people would enjoy hearing how bad-off they are.

Senator, are you paying attention? Airlines aren't interested in secondary markets. If they cut fares, they'll charge more for baggage. And, they're certainly not flying more planes half-full to Sioux Falls.

He is running for re-election, and Sioux Falls happens to have the largest voter-base in the state. Coincidence?

You have to have volume in order to lower cost. Simple economics.

Given the low population in the state, there is not enough volume for more flights and direct flights.

This article just proves how incompetent and intellectually naive our wonderful lawmakers are.
I worked for Northwest Airlines in Sioux Falls,Sd for 4.5 years until we were conveniently outsourced because of upper management. I always knew that day would come because Republicans have always wanted to break unions allowing them more control over the average people.
I had heard through the grapevine that Senator Thune had said that airline employees were overpaid. I believe that he honestly thinks this way after reading that article.
I honestly believe that if Daschle would have still been in the Senate our jobs would have been saved in Sioux Falls.Maybe we should put a billboard up in South Dakota with Daschle's picture saying "Miss me yet?"
Let's face it people, Republicans will never have the average people in mind when ruling this country. They have made it clear by the way they act, talk, and govern.
