The US government should stay out of it, and let charity organizations handle it. Kids die in Haiti regularly and by the scores from dehydration. It went on before the earthquake, and it will continue long after the last member of the red cross leaves the country.
The country has almost no modern infrastructure, and their sewage system is a joke. They've had a population explosion that has been pronounced since 1980. With 9 million and counting now, by the next generation the country will have Haitians dying by the scores, since they've already laid waste to most of the resources on that island. Haiti is a ticking time bomb, and this was just the preliminary explosion. A whole new hell is coming, and there's nothing American's can do about it except get out of the way.

Well put. Mean but honest.
Let's get out, it's not our job.

This is what they expect from us. Our country is limping along as it is. Let someone else step up and pick up this tab. Personally...I'm tapped out.
"I want the Americans to take over the country. The Haitian government can't do anything for us," said Jean-Louis Geffrard, a laborer who lives under a tarp in the crowded square. "When we tell the government we're hungry, the government says,'We're hungry, too.' "
Added Canga Matthieu, a medical student whose school was destroyed: "The American government should take care of us."
"They're well organized. The United States is the richest country in the world, and they can help."
The discussion went back and forth cordially. Jacot said he would be talking with the utility's director to learn what was needed. Theolien defined his bottom line: "What we really want is the United States to rebuild it, to modernize."
