I've been going to Haiti from the US for 10 years and have come to know a little about the lives and expectations of people born into a situation they themselves are helpless to overcome. When "government" is the only entitly with power and resources then the people do nothing for themselves (because they can't and they have been taught by the system not to). The people as a whole are not the problem; it is those certain persons in positions of power who are either overwhelmed by the problem(s) or seduced by power to serve only themselves who are unable or unwilling to make a real difference within their own community.
We (the U.S.) better take a lesson here...private industry and good old competition and capitalism are what make our country continue to work. "We, the people" better keep the balance of power where it is and not hand it over to "government" or we will soon be no better off than those poor souls in Haiti.
Take a water purifier with you ( www.waterfortheworld.org )and go do what you can to help; I did. If you treat and save only a few, at least they will be well and able to help others. Be part of the solution, even if it is here at home. Act, don't just talk...
