Does ADT still go door-to-door to sell alarm systems? Twice we've had them come by in the last month, ring the doorbell...never have we opened the door, but it just seemed fishy as they seemed to have no car or van.

Called ADT and they did not help much.

Does anybody know about ADT scams?

yeah, a lot of them are ex-cons that can;t get real jobs and the seedy distributors don't check their backgrounds because they make them "independent contractors" so they dont get held liable for anything that they do.

I have a lot of knowledge in this area. I would love to say that they are excons...but in my state they are not. They are required to do a local, county, state and federal background check. Then they have to be licensed by the state. Now, I will say this about my competitor though. They will trick their way into your home by offering you a free sign to put in front of your house.

I am a part owner of an ADT dealership. My reps are all employees and are required to take drug screens and background checks. Same with my installers. My company is pround to have low attrition, and my employees love their "real" jobs. My top producer was a top-producing Farmer's Insurance agent and he loves spending time door-to-door outside.

It's important to know that ADT has a dealer program as well as a corporate sales channel. Corporate salepeople run mostly preset appointments from ADT's TV campaign response leads. Systems cost upwards of $339 and require a 3 year monitoring contract. Dealers are allowed to sell the systems for $99 with a 3 year contract. Justly Paranoid, ADT cannot be responsible for getting the companies who knock on your door to stop, just as Pepsi can't control how Safeway or Wal-Mart sells their product to you. If you live in Houston, the people knocking are most likely from Ranger American, which is a very reputable dealer. The reason you don't see a car is that it's easier to walk from door to door than drive 30 feet, get out, knock, drive another 30 feet, and repeat. The car is around the corner or a couple of blocks away. If ADT was a "scam", why do 7 million American households and 25 million people worldwide use the service? ADT has been in business since 1874 and monitors 80% of the Fortune 500 companies for a reason. Most dealers do use the "trick" Andre wrote about with the yard sign. If the salesperson does not create urgency or have a good story, people don't buy. Without the $99 system in exchange for putting up a yard sign story, people don't understand how we can sell the system for such a low price (ADT pays us well for the contract, so we can afford to give a basic system away for $99). It is true, though, yard signs do help advertise in the sense that people like to keep up with their neighbors, and when the neighbors are happy with their new system, we'll usually get 2 or 3 new installs in the same neighborhood within the week. The catches are: you have to have reasonable credit (575 or higher), you must be a homeowner, you must agree to a 3 year monitoring agreement (how else would ADT make money by letting us give the systems away?).

I've heard that there are monitoring companies that sell the monitoring to people like ADT for about $5 per month and ADT turns around and sells it to you for about $25 per month.

I wonder if I can get the wholesale price for monitoring as I already have a system installed.

As for ADT, I live in Seabrook and I've had the Free Sign ADT people around twice in the last month.

Oh, one more thing. To avoid having door knockers disturb a quiet evening at home, post a small "no soliciting" sign near your door or doorbell. Salespeople dislike wasting time knocking on your door, especially considering that you ignore them. Do yourself and solicitors a favor and post a tasteful sign. Also, consider purchasing an alarm system yard sign from ebay. You should expect to pay about $10 including shipping, and will not only help deter criminals, but alarm salespeople.

Scams. No I've been selling alarms door to door for 6 years. What better way to reach a homeowner
that doesnt already have my product. people should'nt worry about the guy that knocks on there
door with a name badge and a good picth and knows
his product they should be worryed about thousands of breakins that haped every day no some on who intoduces him self and trys to help you with a problem that whether you want address is your buisness theres nothing unsual about a door to door alarm salesman security systems have been sold this way for years and every good alarm company at it foundation has a few good door knockers. I work for a reputable company and sell a monitronics monitoring services some company are a little lacking in the service side so check out who ever your doing buisness with dont bother with the bbb if the company has done any thing realy bad its going to be at the construction contracters board you can do that in 5 minutes while the salesmans in your home. dont be afraid of door to door belive me when i tell you I've saved some of my coustomers up to 1700 they had
puchesed the system through there builder I was able to give the more and there alarm is monitored for three years. I dont come knocking offering a bad deal mabe you should open the door
next time you might just like what that sales man has to say.

You need to get and alarm I think you would feel much safer next time they knock open the door and let them give your the free system

I used to sell door-to-door for a company and that's the reason I don't open my door anymore. The last time I did, a 12 year old was using the same lines I used 10 years ago and I almost ended up with a bunch of magazine subscriptions. Especially in MN when it's either too hot or too cold outside...I don't answer the door.

I was helping a friend move and she needed to go to work early in the morning and she gave me a key to get in her house so I could start boxing things up; she said would turn off the alarm.

Well...she forgot to turn off the alarm. So I called her and turned it off, this about 10 minutes later ANOTHER 20 MINUTES later the police come knocking on the door.

The response is so slow that it's not worth having an alarm, also this alarm went off for 10 minutes not one neighbor investigated.

You don't think the crooks know this, alarms are useless; your better off with a gun, it's cheaper and if your life is in danger then you have immediate recourse rather than wait 30 minutes for the police to show.

That is a common problem with security systems. They do not go directly to police they are routed through the company and then depending on the area you are in eventually to the local PD.
The alarm company will inevitably put the delay on the PD when you complain about the response time.

I sell alarms every summer in big cities. I have done it for 2 years now, it is a great opportunity to save money. Definitely people can be unethical, as in any business practice, but the systems we give out are sold by adt for a larger amount initially, and the monitoring cost is pretty similar. The systems themselves are usually GE or honeywell products, and are exactly the same between all the big companies. Alarm systems are great, and door to door guys who market them must be honest, if they aren't the companies which hired them will fire them.

SOMEONE BROKE INTO MY HOUSE TWO NIGHTS AGO.I DON'T CARRY CASH LARGER THAN 20 BUCKS-so THEY TOOK THAT!THE FOLLOWING NIGHT AN ADT REP WITHOUT A BADGE, A CAR OR A CARD COMES TO OFFER US FREE INSTALLATION AND 32.00 DOLLARS PER MONTH SERVICE. hOW DID HE KNOW THAT WE WERE ROBBED? Is he a fraud that sends people to break in just so that we could rush and get the system. I really don't want to get the service now.

This happened in our neighborhood as well. I called ADT and was told that they do go door to door. I have a sign in my yard and what bothered me is when I pointed this out, I was asked if it was hooked up.

Being a former ADT employee, we all had to undergo a background check to obtain licensing. They go door to door typically in neighborhoods that have documented burglaries....They are not ex-cons and some of us made well over six figures in that business!!!!

I have an ADT system and my neighbor doesnt, but he bought an ADT sign off ebay. He doesnt pay for any service, is that legal? Can they stop him from doing that? I dont really care, but I think its funny.

If you reported it to the police dept, he basically does a search and it will pull up your street name but not your personal address.

That could seem a little strange or maybe just a coincidence!!

Some people steal signs out of their neighbors yards!!! Its not illegal to buy a sign, it is illegal to sell them if you work for ADT.....
I used to get asked all the time to sell the sign and stickers...

Ranger American is not a good company. They will screw their customers just to add to the bottom line. As a former employee it made me sick to see how they would not work with their customers. It is their way or no way. I would advise anyone that wants a security system to go through another company. They will lie to customers telling them they have 3 days to cancel after the signing date even though you CAN cancel 3 days after the activation date not NOT the signing date.
