$120,000 in federal funding for community gardens is a lot of money, but I think this would have served a much better purpose if it allocated to help students with their tuition fees and given to students as need-based grants.

The money would be better spent on perennials such as fruit trees and blueberries, raspberries, asparagus, rhubarb, herbs, etc, around the parking lots. I can see a big mess with raised gardens and expensive topsoil moved in. What a fiasco! Will Bernie and Michelle be their in the $500 sneakers?

Who tends to the gardens during vacations? Can the public come in and take care of it and harvest it?

Cool, the kids can produce some actual food. Now that's a practical kind of education.
Oh wait, hold on a second...Bernie Sanders is behind this? What a waste of taxpayer money! He's trying to convert those kids into little socialists! Down with school gardens! Vote Sanders out in November!

The Vermont courts ruled against Kurn Hattin boys school/home farm stating that the school was forcing the kids into labor. Private school farms like the one in Putny however are considered charming and real symbols of Vermont.

This is an interesting article speaking to the private support of projects. Why are VT Schools looking to the Government?

One of those programs is New England Kurn Hattin Homes in Westminster, Vt., which has been providing a home and school for children from broken homes since 1894. By all accounts Mr. Bissell contributed very generously to the home during his lifetime, and his foundation has continuously awarded grants there since his death.
Former students of the home, on a hillside overlooking the Connecticut River Valley, retain idyllic images of Kurn Hattin and of its benefactor. They also recall that for years Mr. Bissell would visit for several weeks every summer and use his own money to obtain tractors, farm equipment and whatever else was needed.
''He took a particular interest in the dairy and produce farm and even helped us when we worked,'' said David Maysilles, a former executive director of the home, who himself lived there as a teenager from 1936 to 1943.''He always seemed friendly and willing to help out and made life a lot better for all of us who stayed there.''
Christopher Barry, Kurn Hattin's current executive director, said the J. Walton Bissell Foundation had made it possible for programs like his to continue and thrive.
''We've always heard stories about him over the years, about how he loved coming up here and seeing how his donations were making a difference in the lives of our children,'' Mr. Barry said.''All I know is, his foundation's generous grants continue to make a difference in their lives to this day.'
After her prominent husband, Charles E. Culpeper, died in 1940 after founding and for many years leading the Coca-Cola Bottling Company in New York City, Daphne Seybolt Culpeper of Norwalk devoted much of her remaining years to charitable and philanthropic causes.
With no living relatives when she died, in 1976, Mrs. Culpeper made sure in her will that her estate was used to establish THE DAPHNE SEYBOLT CULPEPER MEMORIAL FOUNDATION to benefit not-for-profit organizations in the two states where she had her homes, Connecticut and Florida.
Nearly 25 years after her death, the foundation's fund is at about $20 million and it is planning to give out almost $1 million this year; several dozen grants are awarded annually to community groups, programs

It' not what you do with the money it's the lobby interest who pushes it through the pipe line. It's most likely a spin off of the legalize pot smoking. Is this a agriculture bill or education bill or even a welfare bill. here's a voucher to go buy a tractor and barn to keep it in. Now you saved 15.00 this year in veggies you spent 100. bucks on diesel fuel and forgot to put in the oil. How much is scrape a pound.

Stupid is what stupid does and so goes Sanders with money for trowels and hoses so some kids can play in the dirt. Plant fruit trees and then pick the fruit year after year. Teach the kids how to prune trees and control bugs. Then you will have something.

"Former students of the home (kurn hattin) on a hillside overlooking the Connecticut River Valley, retain idyllic images of Kurn Hattin"
The former quote is a joke. The fact is many former residents of the school retain horrible memories of their experience and the abuse that took place there - often at the hands of those charged with the children's care.
And yes, children have been used as a labor source at kurn hattin since its beginning.

Like anyone would notice, it seems like you can't let a thread go by without spamming it up with your horrible infowars propaganda that you constantly mistake for news. Onward christian soldier! Your insane shouting shepard commands it! BE AFRAID OF EVERYTHING I SHOUT ABOUT WITHOUT QUESTION!

I prefer to post the actual, verifiable, empirical truth. If you have any credible evidence that contradicts me, I have yet to see it.
Right wing conspiracy theories are usually pretty far from any truth. Nothing but fear, fear, fear, almost always without reason or any credible inquiry.
These are lies that are meant to oppress, divide and frighten.
People who disregard the truths of climate science without any credible evidence have blood on their hands.

I think it a very good and honorable thing to teach students about agriculture.
There are a lot of important skills, they get some exercise while actually doing something instead of just throwing a ball around and they learn to have some respect for where our food actually comes from.
