Some of the nicey's are things you could find at antique shops or thrift stores. I love the vases, dishes and water pitchers from Italy, England and France. Drape them with ivy,(less is better) from Michaels Craft Store. There are the best imitation flourals I have found. I haven't been every where! Wish I knew of nicer stores for crafts.
Enjoy!

I have a further problem since we have cathedral

I think that you could find some ideas on this website: www.velvetbrown.co.uk
I know that they have a lot of great home accessories that might help you to change the look of your cabinets and not only!

for some free advice. Here is a "cleaning tip" for above your cabinets. Line the top of your cabinets with newspaper. It will keep it clean. Every few months just take up your paper and replace it with new ones. No more dusting!!

I collected tins for many years and have them all around my cabinet tops with a strand of christmas lights inter-mingled to show just a small amount of light at night with little cost in electricity. I have a small artificial palm tree in the corner for balance.

Whys are you trying to cover the space above the kitchen cabinets? That's not where you want eyes to go. You want them to stay at "human" level, which is done with artwork and accessories around the room, not around the ceiling level. This is one of the biggest decorating mistakes people make.

I'm considering putting up some baskets or something, not many and then drape a bit of lighted garland around to add some mood lighting to the kitchen.. anyone ever use lights like that on the top cabinets?

What do you do to make the cabinets not look so bare at the top?

I have wine bottles with single strands of Christmas lights poked down in them and we change the ribbon around the top. They look very cute!

I'm redecorating on top of my cabinets too!! My cabinets are white and my walls are 'toasty grey'. The new style here in TX is rustic chic. So I think I'm going to try to pair up things that are dark in color. I found a dark wood round wall clock that I can put on an easel to stand up on. Pair that with 2 dark wicker baskets. Or you can add 2 dark vases. There are also signs in dark colors that say things like live, laugh, love or bistro. Then put it on an easel. Also check your local antique store. There are alot of nice rustic things there too. I think whatever your style is as long as you keep it in the same color family, It will look great!!

Newspaper requires cutting or folding; however, if you buy a roll of waxed paper, it will be the perfect size to just unroll on the tops of those cabinets. Please don't put me to shame by cleaning any more often than yearly or every two years! Indirect lighting on the top of the cabinets is elegant and uplifting. For a more country kitchen, I've seen collections of tins up on top, but apparently greenery (used sparingly) is better for most other styles. I've seen collections of birdhouses, trivets, plates, and baskets. I personally think it gives cozies up the kitchen.

I have put a pretty hurricane candle holder I was going to garage sale but glad I didn't, a metal globe (I like to travel)and some wooden letters I am painting a different color that will spell out our last name, got letters to spell out FAMILY too. Thought about EAT, DINE, or FOOD but wanted to keep it personal. I framed an old post card from Pikes Peak (born in CO and love the pike.I also have glass storage jars filled with misc items too. These are just a few ideas of what's above our cabinets. I also like the idea of putting old cookbooks on display. However I am very picky cause what goes up will need cleaned and greenery and grease don't sound fun to clean.

Can you explain exactly how you did this, because this sounds like such a good idea. Thank you.
