I visited Moneygall on Thursday evening, and driving into the "town" was akin to driving into the Shankill, or The Falls Road, as there were flags fluttering from poles a few feet apart from one end of the street to the other. The only difference were the colours (except the Tricolour). Television crews from US and elsewhere, were scouring the place for some new snippets of information to give their reports "a new twist."
I called into the shop/post office - nice people behind the counter, a small busy place with flags, t-shirts, postcards, etc - all referring to Obama's tenuous links with the area.
Posters blared at you showing his face and his upcoming visit.
One even stated that he drinks a particular beverage, called "Honest". I presume this is made-up to inflate his image as an honest President. I had never heard of a drink called Honest. Guinness, Beamish, Murphys - but not Honest.
I called in to Ollie Hayes's pub where there was great craic with a band keeping the patrons entertained - not with Irish music, but carribean music, yes it's true. I had a pint and enjoyed the athmosphere and banter. On my way out, I went over to a bust of Obamas adorning the counter and what did I see beside it- you guessed it - a bottle of HONEST. I read the label and it contained Organic Tea - not Barrys or Lyons - but Honest. It also had a label on it celebrating the President's visit to Ireland. It stated on it that it was distributed by Be Well Distributors, which must be an American company. Imagine some American company shipping in Obama's favourite drink (supposedly)- must have cost a pretty penny.
I then wandered around for a while to allow the pint to get out of my system and the street was quiet by then. I left the town with a happy feeling and wish the "Moneygallers" a great day on Monday.
