'Close To The Divine': Wiccans aren't so different from other faiths

There are 277 comments on the www.record-eagle.com story from Mar 15, 2008, titled 'Close To The Divine': Wiccans aren't so different from other faiths. In it, www.record-eagle.com reports that:

While Christians prepare to celebrate the good news of the resurrection of Jesus Christ this Easter, a lesser known religion is preparing for a major celebration of its own. As the Earth's axis tilts the northern hemisphere back toward the sun, followers of Wicca, a nature-based religion, will celebrate Ostara, a holy day of seasonal rebirth and renewal, during the vernal equinox on Thursday..

In the Catholic cosmology, this is true. But religious studies folks would certainly classify satan as at least a demi-god, but more likely a full-fledged deity. Angels certainly would also be classified as lesser deities and saints would also likely be classified the same way, especially within speaking about the Catholic practices on the subject. Both views are essentially correct in their own context and neither shows any sort of ignorance.

You faith tells you there is only one god, so what are all of those other things? People with miraculous abilities (saints), lords of the underworld capable of battling, if unsuccessfully, your god himself, and beings residing with your god who intercede in human affairs on his behalf? They are definitely on a different level than us and I think even Catholics could agree that they are a different classification of being from human. You may argue that they all get their power and existence from god, but they are a separate privileged class in the christian pantheon nevertheless. Or am I wrong? Do people pray to you the same way they pray to St. Francis?

Also He would feel sad to think anyone WOULD call a demon a deity.
Calling satan a deity does not, in any way, make him equivalent to god. It is readily apparent from christian theology that he is a lesser being. But satan, the saints, and angels can all safely be called deities without revoking the singular power of the christian god.

I would argue that your rhetoric in these forums tends to favor satan over god if you really look at it. You've focused little on god's love and tremendous volumes on the eternal punishments meted out by satan and his minions. I think anyone unfamiliar with christianity (is there anyone in the US like that?) would come away from your discussions feeling more like satan was an evil, yet all-powerful, primary god with your god as a benevolent underdog.

Again Knit, your primary failing is in your lack of understanding of how you are perceived by the world around you. If you really wish to make a difference to anyone's soul, you essentially have to behave as a PR person for god. Everybody knows the christian tag lines and the threats of satan. That stuff's played out. You need to make a separate case for god from all the tired tirades. The era of the 'god-shaped hole', if a little cheesy, was a far more effective tool than the 'repent, you dirty sinners' method.

This is terrible! Not only are you claiming to speak for Jesus, but you're saying he's laughing at someone?? You claim to be a Christian, but you sure don't act like one!

Ahhh and you know so much about the various Pagan religions to make that decision how? Give me sources of your study, actual sources, The Bible doesnt count, for your presumptions.

Actually, I don't know why I bother considering that you never answer direct questions anyway.

Ignore Knit.

I appreciate her tenacity and insistence that her god is the only god and her only source is the bible, but it makes it pretty much impossible to discuss on any grounds other than christian. In other words she's preaching to the choir. So if you're listening, and she is at all convincing to you, you're already christian and likely a member of her congregation. It's essentially like trying to have a religious dialog with a hymnal.

Right Back At you......No apologizes needed.. Just glad to be in the convo.. Well kind of... LOL..
Seems I speak some times to much like I have my nose stuck in a book...
And a lot of people think me odd because I study ancient Biblical Transcripts, Religions and Cults. You, have to love it though...
What they say and what they end up being translated into, years and books later, Is amazing. They don’t usual come out the same..
It also amazes me that a lot of people don’t realize the bible is made up of different "scripts".
And the one Religious leaders are taught with
look and read nothing like the average, Christian uses...(reads)..
Ancient people didn’t think, dress, live or have any idea-ism any thing like ours.
So how could we possible understand with out any doubt what any of them were
Thinking. When they wrote some thing down.. Or what they really meant…

I would have to agree with you most of this post. It’s rather hard to have a conversation
When the person your talking to wont tell you any thing really to promote or dismiss the
Subject… I do feel bad here some times.. My colleges and I have wonderful conversations about religion, creation, any thing… And it’s not Believe or Burn In Hell… Its like pulling Teeth here…
Some time it amazes me,, maybe because I think to much.. But if one was to believe
In the “One God” Christian God.. And they believe mostly in what is said in the Bible.
Then they know they are supposed to be educators.. And smacking some one over the head..“”Bang on head” Believe or burn in Hell. Mentality doesn’t work..

It's on the Pagan/Wiccan forum....here:

http://www.topix.com/forum/religion/pagan-wic...

Remarkably, it has the least amount of religious debate of any of the pagan/wiccan threads...seems the Christians are, in fact, unwilling to come and save our souls when they're actually INVITED to! hehe.

you talk about "us" sacrificing children and all that Jazz yet look at your own bible and how it crontradicts itself on how "KIND" your GOD is:

""""I will not pity, nor spare, nor have mercy, but destroy." (Jer. 13:14) "Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not, but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling."

"The Lord is very pitiful and of tender mercy." (James 5:11)
"For his mercy endureth forever." (1 Chron. 16:34)
"The Lord is good to all, and his tender mercies are over all his works." (Ps. 145:9)
"God is love." (1 John 4:16)"""

How does that prove that your religion is the kinder of the two???

oooh..
Im not a Christian how ever.. I would never of said the Christian reliqion is one of the "Kind" ones.. Not at all.
Depending on what religion you are. You may get different levels of kindness given to you..
So maybe i agree with you here?
