Mother's Day

Concealed guns could save lives

What a senseless, preventable and sad tragedy it is that a young, productive man was cut down by a thug on the day of his first child's birth .

Like most urban dwellers my family and friends chose to not go to the city. This means anywhere in the city. My children do not go on field trips, we do not attend ball games and any buisness that has to be done is electronic or snail mail.

In my lifetime I have witnessed several acts of violence downtown including brawls in the stadium parking lot and gunfire near Canton.

My solution DONT GO IN THE CITY it is not safe.

"My solution DONT GO IN THE CITY it is not safe." Sounds like a great solution! Except that... well, the murder in question occurred in BALTIMORE COUNTY, NOT the city. So maybe you just shouldn't ever leave your house at all. Oh, and if you don't live in a city, you are, by definition, NOT an "urban dweller." So your first sentence makes absolutely no sense.

There is no need to defend oneself.

Mother Dixon and Daddy O'Malley will protect you.

Yes, I am kidding.

Yeah, good luck getting that through Moscow-on-the-Bay. The liberals would rather have homeowners die at the hands of crack-charged thugs bent on stealing, raping, and killing than let you carry a gun. Because, you know, it's helped DC reduce its crime rate so much. Oh, wait . . .

I agree with caution, sure. Reality is not always a pretty picture though...the reality is that you can be attacked in your own home while sleeping.

I oppose anything O'Malley supports. He is bad for the state. I have no problem with a concealed gun law. My only hesitation would be the number of people who feel they have to use the gun because they have the gun. If it is a justified situation, OK; but I'm worried about the panicky ones who will shoot at anything that frightens them.

As a former A.A. County resident, I would love to see Maryland enact a concealed carry law. Unfortunately, the number of hoops you would have to jump through would probably be prohibitive. The law here in Idaho is quite simple. You get a background check and take a course offered by the county sheriff's department and you got it. I feel for my friends back in the "Free State" on this subject. Watch your backs and keep your hands on your wallet--here comes Uncle Maaaaty O'Malley!

That's a great approach. Somebody gets killed in Baltimore County so don't go into the city.

Your kids can't go on fieldtrips? How pathetic. All the art museums are in the city as well as the Aquarium, the MD Science Center. If you are such a scaredy cat I imagine you also deprive your children of all the great places to visit in DC too.

This is how the thugs and terrorists keep a hold on the city. They strike fear into people to keep them from doing what they want to do and being free.

Tie the concealed carry pertmit to an IQ test. That will eliminate most Marylanders as candidates -- and almost all posters to the Sun blogs.

Furthermore, I'm not aware of anyone at all getting killed going into the city to visit these places. Not a single one. That doesn't mean it's never happened, but I don't think it's happened in my adult life.

Yes, good idea. That way most won't get a "pertmit", and the rest won't get a "permit".

I support the right to own guns, and concealed carry laws have reduced violence in other states, but they are restricted to less population dense states.

Can you imagine rush hour on the Baltimore Beltway if people were armed?

I totally agree. I'm tired of hearing about innocent, hardworking and law abiding citizens being murdered, robbed, raped or violated at the hands of immoral criminals who have no regard for the lives of others. I also think that if hardworking, law abiding citizens were given the permission to arm themselves against would be violent opportunist, these criminals would be less willing to attack and or violate. If we (law abiding, honest and hardworking citizens) begin to defend ourselves against these would be prepetrators, regardless of age, race and or social status, i truly believe that we will see a drastic decrease in the trend of senseless attacks on innocent and defenseless citizens. Maybe, once the inncocent victims are no longer easy targets, these criminal minded people will begin to wipe themselves out. Just maybe.(I apologize for the cynicism, but i'm just frustrated at how we are unable to go about our daily lives without living in fear of violence, even when we do not subject ourselves or our families to such situations)

Treat guns like a car. Gotta take a class, pass a test, then you can gwet a license to carry a gun.

Mr. Gamber's comments about concealed weapons is delusional. Guns used by individuals are most likely used for suicide or shooting a family member or pet. Way way down the list of gun use is real crime prevention. Mr. Gamber is obviously an impressionable person who beleives that an individual has the right to bear arms. We do not and despite the lies of the NRA guns do kill people.

Let me get this right...

So you are saying that if I have a gun in the house and it is my time of the month I will shoot someone just because my hormones are going crazy as well?

Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, luckily.

I have guns in my house, yes. My kids have been raised around gun safety as have I. Basically the only time my gun is going to be aimed at someone is if my children's or my own life is in danger. I will drop someone in a heartbeat before they take out someone I love.

If that makes me a bad person, well I'll just be a bad person and go on with my peaceful existence.

The one point I do agree with you on though is the fact that guns do kill people. Not everyone should own nor have the possession of a firearm of any type.

Moe needs to get a life ! Yes, we, as law-abiding citizens should have the right to bear arms and protect ourselves. Under your way of thinking, all the thugs would be armed ( and they have no regard for the law) while law abiding people are victims and sitting ducks with no way to defens ourselves. We're dead before the Police or anyone else can come to our rescue. If we were allowed to carry guns, criminals would think twice before confronting someone who may be armed and able to protect themselves. Kind of changes things some, huh ? If you know anything about history, Hitler first dis-armed the people, then easily took over.

Wrong. The right to keep and bear arms is guaranteed explicitly by the Second Amendment to the US Constitution. As inconvenient as that is for liberals, it's the truth and has been for hundreds of years. DC's failed handgun ban is about to get shot down by the Supreme Court, and my money is that Maryland's refusal to allow trained, law-abiding citizens to carry a concealed weapon will be put to a forceful end soon after.

Sorry, but your days of limiting our constitutional rights are numbered.
