PETA: Why not a robotic groundhog?

There are 587 comments on the KBCI CBS 2 story from Jan 27, 2010, titled PETA: Why not a robotic groundhog?. In it, KBCI CBS 2 reports that:

An animal rights group wants organizers of Pennsylvania's Groundhog Day festival to replace Punxsutawney Phil with a robotic stand-in. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals says it's unfair to keep the animal in captivity and subject him to the huge crowds and bright lights that accompany tens of thousands of revelers each Feb.

christ almighty i know all this about the dogs and such helping autistic children but a dog cant teach a child to read or write now can it? animals are secondary to humans and thats just how it is. no i couldnt fight a tiger without a weapon but you prove my point by stating that humans are smart enough to invent the weapon and use it as a tool.
Did I ever say a dog could teach a child to read or write? Um, no. But they can teach children trust, companionship, respect, confidence, give them more independence if handicap, etc. All of which are important, too. Or maybe you could care less if your children have any of those qualities.

And just because YOU believe animals are secondary to humans doesn't make it so...

so you see a drowning child and a drowning dog which do you save? those things can be taught by humans too.

How does it kill my theory? I doubt I would EVER be put in that situation...let me ask you...if two children were drowning at the same time and you could only save one which would you save? Same thing...

nope you save the one that is nearest to you than attempt to save the second one. my question was simply you see a dog and a child drowning, both are equal distances from you which one do you save first?
