PETA: Why not a robotic groundhog?

There are 587 comments on the KBCI CBS 2 story from Jan 27, 2010, titled PETA: Why not a robotic groundhog?. In it, KBCI CBS 2 reports that:

An animal rights group wants organizers of Pennsylvania's Groundhog Day festival to replace Punxsutawney Phil with a robotic stand-in. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals says it's unfair to keep the animal in captivity and subject him to the huge crowds and bright lights that accompany tens of thousands of revelers each Feb.

The groundhog gets to live easy... Eat, sleep, excrete, & make little groundhogs with out fear of predators...and he only has to work 1 day a year and PETA has a problem with it???? I'll dress up in a costume and do the job if I get the same benefits.(Human equivolent)

oh how unfair that for 20 mins a year he sees people, instead lets just throw him out into the wild where he could starve, get shot, get run-over, get eaten, etc, etc, stop crying about it, its not like they pin him down and let people take shots at him. the animal is living a better life than some people do.

Why not a Robotic PETA? The robot couldn't ever be dumber than anyone who belongs to that organization.

Peta is a terriorst organization...anyone who belongs is a nut! They are way to extreme...I wish they would spend their money and time on schools, eduation, and homeless children here in the US

PETA seems to forget that they themselves are animals. Maybe they could just focus on each other and leave the rest of us alone

Yes, make PETA more humane by replacing the mindless sheep with robots.

Well, ALF makes PETA look like Sunday School kids. The Animal Liberation Front really is a bunch of terrorists. All you have to do is install FreeNet and you will find ALF materials, and bomb-making and arson instructions that seem to be endorsed by ALF.

Yeah ALF is pretty scary. I used to think good thoughts about the word ALF but they turned my furry friend into a militant organization.

The shame is that groundhogs aren't as edible as squirrells and rabbits.

My ideal version of Groundhog Day: Let Punxsutawney Phil out, see if he sees his shadow or not, whack him over the head with a bat, and then cook him and serve him up to the spectators.

Heck yeah. Just like on Turkey day we all eat as much Turkey as possible. We need to eat Groundhogs on Groundhog Day. Instead of fighting over the wishbone we can fight over them buckteeth

I think you on a platter would make a more appealing dish.

In a little town called Lexington, NC, their idea of Ground Hog Day is a festival in mid to late October where they serve ground hog. Okay, that is the Lexington BBQ Festival. Of course, you are better off if you want BBQ that day to leave the festival for about an hour and eat at your favorite local BBQ establishment. The problem with the barbecue sold at the festival is that all the local participating BBQ places pool it all together and it isn't necessarily as good as it is served in the restaurants. Downtown is closed down the entire Saturday while vendors and a huge mob line the street, and there will be other attractions such as community service groups handing out pamphlets, and usually 3 stages with various entertainment including a 1-2 Gospel groups, maybe some clogging, maybe a Blues group, and maybe a standup comedian.

PETA says that the groundhogs are kept in cages, and are then let out of their cages for one day.Kind of sounds like people working in an office building _they are kept in their cages(cubicles)all day,and then are let out at night so everyone can run free.Maybe PETA should examine this situation to make sure us humans are treated as well as the groundhogs?

I got an idea, instead of using a groundhog how about we get to take shots at a PETA member, if they can outrun the bullet - 6 more months of winter.

If they get hit - it'll be a early, happy spring with 1 less NUTJOB PETA member.
