Drinko de mayo, a day of louder than usual boomboxes blasting mariachi at 100db all day and drunken revelers. Just the different ethnic version of st paddys day, an excuse to get drunk. Hopefully the DWI checkpoints will be plentiful.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.(AP)- Cinco de Mayo has become a popular celebration throughout America, but it's an obscure holiday in Mexico. Most Americans are unaware of its original ties the U.S. Civil War, links to abolition and promotion of civil rights for blacks. Cinco de Mayo commemorates the 1862 Battle of Puebla between the victorious ragtag army of largely Mexican Indian soldiers against the invading French forces of Napoleon III. David Hayes-Bautista, author of "El Cinco de Mayo: An American Tradition," said during the Gold Rush when thousands of Latinos came to California, the immigrants linked the battle to the Civil War since Napoleon III supported the Confederacy. The first Cinco de Mayo celebrations had U.S. Civil War themes but changed over time. Today the holiday is heavily promoted by restaurants and beer companies.

It's in honor of the Rev Benito Juarez started, and he was an anti-Catholic church socialist.

Viva la Mexico!!!!!! A real Mexican wouldn't write or say: "Viva la Mexico", but Viva Mexico, or maybe Viva la Raza, Viva la Patria, etc.

Most people don't know that back in 1912, Hellman's mayonnaise was manufactured in England. The "Titanic" was carrying 12,000 jars of the condiment scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico, which was to be the next port of call for the great ship after New York City. The Mexican people were eagerly awaiting delivery and were disconsolate at the loss. So much so that they declared a national day of mourning which they still observe today. It is known, of course, as Sinko de Mayo.

Don't make fun of Cinco de Mayo. It has a lot in common with March 17 (St. Patrick's Day). On St. Patrick's Day, a segment of the population celebrates the SNAKES being driven out of Ireland. On Cinco de Mayo, another segment of the population celebrates the FROGS being driven out of Mexico. From a member one of the sister Celtic Nations.
