This is such a sad story. I wish that everyone one knew what happened to those children

Does anyone have any family that were around at the time this happened? Has anyone heard any of their elder family members talk about what they think truly happened to these children? Just curious what the general consensus in the area is/was about these kids and this family.

One of the surviving brothers still lives at Oak Ridge beside of Ball's store. They have suspicions that the children were kidnapped by Italians, but never really knew for sure what happened to them. Production companies and several shows have contatced the family over the years wanting the rights to make a movie of this, but the family wishes not to. I know that Unsolved Mysteries called them numerous times in the late 80's/early 90's, but they still refused the offer.--If it were me, curiosity would eat me away and I would allow thw story to be aired, so that I would have the possibility of knowing what really happened. I could not imagine going to my grave with a horrible story such as this one!

I really have no idea why the Italians were suspected. This is only what I was told by a family member. I am like you---I would search until my dying breath. From what I was told, the mother of the children searched for them until she died.

How sad and horrible for the whole family...I would think as the children got older they would search for their family but then again maybe they all know and its better that only the family knows. Me I could not deal with not knowing where my family was. I feel horrible for the whole family.

Im so sure it was so difficult for the mother to die not knowing where her children were...My heart hurts...

It is so sad, I remember from the time I was a child going down the road where that happened and seeing the billboard with the children's pictures on it. It is a sad story and I hope one day for the remaining family members to know what happened and to be reunited with their brothers and sisters!

If it was Italians, it was probably the mafia. I know some guys that used to work for them not too long ago. They pay people to have people who owe money or what not to come up missing. A lot of people think it's only in the movies but I know first hand it is very real. Never heard about this case though.. just browsing.

Its just so odd that they disappeared and then the fire. Of course it had to be something awful. I guess I just wonder why none of the family talks now or any of the neighbors. Someone has to know what happened. So I assume the whole family that was in the house was killed??????

The whole thing does sound so strange. That was the first thing I tought about was did the parents do it. I pulled up all the stories today and read them and they did search for them until they passed away.

Some of the kids were old enought to know where they belonged and who they were. I don't understand if they were alive why they never tried to contact anyone.

The ladder over the hill, the cut phone lines are all so strange and why in the world would it take from 1am until 8am for the fire dept to show up? There are just toooooooo many stange things for someone not to know something.
Just so you know

Please try to leave the Italians out of this one folks. Being part of that family, I don't think this is something you should just throw out there if you don't know what you are talking about. There are loads of stories about what happened there. Let it rest, jesus.

Seriously leave our family alone. He never abused his children so stop. Everyone in our family just wants this to be left alone. It was a horrible event that torn our family up. It has no business being on here. Let it finally rest!

I wish that they would of left the billboard there. It was a part of our towns history and I think that it would of been a reminder to all parents that our friendly little town isnt alway goin to b friendly. I read a book about the family and it was interesting. It tells the details of the story that not many ppl kno. I really recommend reading it if you are interested in this story. The name of this book is "West Virginia Unsolved Murders" by George and Melody Bragg.
