In related news, the Blue Jackets have signed the Tin Man to play first line left wing and The Scarecrow to play backup Goalie.

Kris Russell, Aaron Johnson, John Moore, David Savard, and Nick Holden along with Grant Clitsome? There is no way any team makes the playoffs with these guys as 5 and 6. Wiz is a good addition but the excitement is because he didn't turn the CBJ down for, say , the Red Wings. Not because he is a shut down guy like Pronger. Who would at that price?

Teams need seasoned depth at center (CBJ still doesn't have that) and a major "pain in the butt" shut down defenseman (CBJ still doesn't have that) to make the playoffs.

Look for a nice run through Thanksgiving and then the same panic will set in. Howson will be fired in the later part of the season when the playoffs are out of reach (again).

Wow, I tend to agree with parts of your post, but others, not so much. I have no problem with the guys listed as 5/6 defensman. I think the guys from Springfield could provide some excitement and depth. What I worry about and you mentioned it is a physical/shut down type player who will step up and make guys pay the price in front of the net. Also, I do not see Methot as a top-4 guy. He better bring a new physical element to his game this year for what they are paying him.
With respect to the center position, I think they have now have more depth than most of the playoff teams in 2011. With Carter, Brass and Vermette (Depending on if he stays or moves to a wing), Pahlsson and Mac they should be fine. They have a bunch of young guys who may or may not be ready, but they have been strong in minor hockey.
I really hope you are wrong with the Thanksgiving meltdown, but I think they need to have someone to help Nash with the leadership responsibilities.

Why would Howson do this? If he thinks this new Russell has potential than where does he fit? 3rd/4th line center...no, he's too small! 1st/2nd line center...good luck!! Maybe he could switch to defenseman...go stand in line!!!

If Howson thinks he has too many bottom six forwards...then he must believe the Calverts and Johansens can go up against the league's best players.

This trade and the "Martinek" deal is why Howson should be fired. He doesn't understand what the TEAM needs are. Does anyone actually believe this defense is playoff material? A couple playoff rounds deep? A Stanley Cup type of defense? And why hasn't Howson traded Juice? He's not going to be resigned? And what if Carter/Nash don't gel...what then? And what if Wiseniewski gets hurt...go with last years D, minus Jan Hejda?

I know everyone; "But he traded for Carter & Wiseniewski!" Yeah, really tough call on those two. And it only took him 4years to put on the big boy's shoes. Then turns around and makes deals like these!

I think if Howson is going to shoot himself in the foot, it is going to be with goaltending. If you look at what took Vancouver and Boston to the finals, it was not a strong defense, but rather goaltending. Yes, Luongo was pulled a crazy number of times, but in the games where he played the full 60, he was very good.
As for the defense, I think other than Chara, the majority of players would be very interchangeable with Columbus on both sides.
Defense wins championships in football while goaltending seems to be the answer in hockey.
As for four years, well the planets just lined up. It would have been hard to trade a Jake last summer for many thought the 10-11 was going to be a breakout year. Martinek is not a bad sign, no clue of the thought process with the younger Russell, but still think they need a physical defensman unless they told Methot this would be his role.
