Every GM that has ever existed had to be a GM without prior experience at some point. There is always a first day on the job. With Garth, thats years in the past now. Look- people can critique what he does, that at least makes sense. I just think the "blah blah he was a goalie, blah blah no GM experience thing" **** is over. He played the game? So have other GMs. And the no experience part applied years ago, not now. Just stick to talking about what the guy DOES instead of what he WAS. Whats the problem with that? Is this "he was a goalie and had no GM experience" stuff the biggest criticisms people can come up with? Jeez- I can name things that he has done wrong, but all you guys can come up with is that ****?
Of course there is always a first day at a new job, but most guys that become a GM are not thrust into that position straight from the ice. They usually work within the organization first to get accustomed to the way the operation works, scouting, talent evaluation, assistant coach, etc. Garth Snow was put into a position he was not yet ready to take, even a blindly loyal Islander fan like yourself can see that, can't you? However, all the fault does not lie with Snow, Wang seems to be keeping him from spending any money to at least try and bring in some decent players. Frankly, it's a shame what has happened to this organization over the last 15 years....

He never held any other position at any level in any organization.

Yet, they gave him the job over a proven guy like Neil Smith.

That didn't bother you at all?

Most GM's have been working their way up the organizational depth chart for years...

this guy just says, hey I'll be GM.. no problem.. hence the lack of improvement over the past few years

Oh yes- Neil Smith is so great that he has been... um.... well there was... uh...

He has been twiddling his thumbs for HOW long, besides the few weeks he was here?

Nobody wants anything to do with Neil Smith and I am sick of hearing all the blah blah blah about him. If he was so great he would have a friggin job. Fact is, nobody thinks he is so great besides complaining Islanders fans.

No improvement over the past few years? Thats not really true. Lots of improvements have been made, youre just not even noticing because, like it or not, you cant plant a seed and get a big fertile tree a year later. Things take time.

But some things you can see. The Islanders alumni are actually proud to be part of this organization again, whereas in years past they werent. That means nothing to you? It says a lot to me, since they are in on things a helluva lot more than you are.

Also, the Isles completely revamped their scouting staff- and it is admired a lot more than you think. As a result of that, there is more talent in the Isles system now than there has been in years. Its really young talent though, and it takes TIME before you see the results of that kind of thing- unless you trade em all away for vets. I think some of you would actually prefer that, THAT is the scary part. How old are the kids drafted on his watch? They are still frickin KIDS... but youre mad because they arent all here? They are in college, some of them just starting in college, come on. You need to wait and see as much as you dont like it and want to judge things immediately.

Dont believe me about the scouting staff? Try asking people like Kyle Woodlief of the Red Line report what he thinks of the Islanders scouting staff. Literally, ask him... you can send him an email, he will write back. See if he agrees or disagrees that the ISles have done nothing to improve lol.

Today's is such a quick-fix, instant oatmeal kind of society. If people cant see the results of something right away, they lose sight of what they are even looking for. Thats what has happened to some of you.

If it wasnt Garth and it was ANYONE else, Id feel the same way. I dont give a crap who came in and did thiese things, Im just glad- REALLY glad- that they are finally being done. If anyone came in and revamped the scouting staff and was holding on to our youth (the teenagers and 20yo are who Im talking about)and got the alumni onboard once again I would be just as happy. ITs not about Garth, its about the things that have FINALLY been done. Thats why I said before it doesnt matter who he was it matters what he does. And what he is doing is finally what is right for the longterm benefit of this team instead of BS that might score him points with impatient fans.

If you dont see the truth in what Im saying here, Im sorry. But whether you see it or not, it IS the truth.

I like your gumption and conviction. I don't agree with your observations, but you have vigor in trying to defend your stance.
Your rebuilding arguments lack vision as to what is going on elsewhere. The Oilers' so-called kids, including Bobby Nilsson thank you, are alright. Your scouting staff aced that trade for Ryan Smyth and MA Bergeron? You now have ex-Oilers Guerin, Weight and Comrie who have seen their best before dates expire.
1980s Oilers alumni has never left the organization even with the Edmonton franchise tettering on the brink of being relocated. Maybe Islander alumni appearance fees paid by Wang have been introduced?
As other posters have mentioned ALL legitimate GMs have succeeded at previous levels prior to moving into that NHL chair. He's seen as a joke in other markets.
