Islanders' hopes may hinge on Rangers series

Full story: Newsday

Islanders-Rangers games never are life or death. They only seem that way. Then again ... Considering that the Islanders are five points out of a playoff spot with time growing very short, their part of the ...

1 goal against 2 lousy hockey teams with a third rate goalie stopping over 50 shots...do the Islanders really have what it takes to be winners...didn't they sense what winners are all about wearing the Core's jersey's during warm ups...or is it just more of Mr. Wang's money making more mediocre players millionaires.

Prior to Sunday's game the entire Florida Panthers team stood up and were pounding their sticks against the boards as the Core Players were announced. A class act, without a doubt. But a bunch of players who know what "winners" are all about, and they did just that...they won.

As transient residents on this Island, for players to say "We're All Islanders" just isn't enough...PROVE IT! The guys who stood before you Sunday did, and yes, they not only made us fans proud to be Islander fans, many chose to stay.

Mark, nice article...but tonight isn't about the Islander/Ranger rivalry...it's simply about the Islanders, actually the players, and only the players, and what does the jersey that they will put on actually mean to them. Because if they don't feel our pride, the tradition, the DYNASTY,,,if they weren't motivated Sunday by the boys who did it all, then one by one they can get the hell out town...

A sweep will be sweet! Let's go Rangers! Go-o-o-o-al! Now that Chris "The Neandethal" Simon is gone, this might be a real hockey game. The Icelanders should have dumped more salary before the deadline - since tonight and Thursday will really be their "dead" line.

I realize that as a Ranger fan posting here you didn't actually have a point but I tried to follow you anyway... was the first game of the season "a real hockey game"? Simon wasn't in that one. Since you seem to need a recap:

Oct 10: Isles win 2-1 Simon did not play
Nov 6: Isles win 3-2 Simon had 0 PIM
Nov 19: Isles win 2-1 Simon had 0 PIM
Nov 29: Rags win 4-2 Simon had 7 PIM

Isles fans have a lot more reason to be glad to see him gone than you do. Thanks for reminding me.

How embarrassing will it be when the Rangers get swept this week by a team that can't score? But as usual, the officials will be there to make it as difficult as possible against the overrated Rangers. Someone just looks at Jagr or Avery and they get a penalty.

Thats funny. The islanders hometown newspaper has on many occassions contained articles on how poor officiating has severely hurt the rangers in various games this year, yet your unsubstantiated comment is supposed to be taken seriously?

As "embarassing" as a sweep to the islanders would be, we would still be in playoff position.

besides, the islanders treat rangers games like playoff games. The rangers dont really see the islanders as competitors and it shows when they play poorly against such a bad team.

They should go in to the games with more heart and more desire to win, not saying that what they are doing is right, but then again the only teams the rangers have struggled against this year are the crappy teams such as our little brother from long island.

Rangers still hold the best record against eastern conference playoff opponents.

I particularly like the avery sentence....are you on crack. People pummel avery after he admittedly goads them into things, and after the whistle, and no penalty is called on the opposing player.

Stop talking out of your @$$. You make up things to make your argument, try using facts.

Yea I would say teams sitting in 12th place in the conference really know what winning is about

Looking at the Islanders/Rangers series in retrospect, yea the Rangers lost 3 games against a very beatable team...but when they were playing those games, the Islanders were ahead of the Rangers in the standings, so I don't know if your "we play crappy against crappy teams" theory holds up there

I will say this though...If the Islanders lose tonight, they'd better not win on Thursday. If they win tonight, they'd better win on Thursday.

If they're going to lose, then they'd better keep losing. If they win, they'd better be prepared to go on a huge run and make the playoffs. As I said yesterday,.500 hockey can only bone them at this point in the season

No they werent. During the first 2 games the rangers were actually first in division. The third game which the rangers won was when the rangers fell off.

What did I say that was making an excuse? You dont see Hank going to reporters and telling them how much he likes beating the islanders or devils like DP does. Its usually a bigger deal to the lesser of the teams. In the late 80s and early 90s im sure it was the other way around, with the rangers getting up more than the islanders for those games.

Thats just how it is. The nets still do it with the knicks and they have been the better team over the past 6 years.

I think the rangers will win tonight. For one they are the hottest team in the east with points in their last 12 or so games. 2- Hank has come out with great performances following good showings by valiquette. 3- They have been skating well, and putting up a good amount of goals in recent games, averaging over 4 a game through the last 7 or so games.

But then again I can also see a 2-1 win for the islanders. Im sure it will be fun to watch these 2 games either way.

why would we need to make any excuses...we have a winning club? I understand your need to make excuses for your team, but lying about avery getting preferrential treatment from referees is a little out there.

Perhaps you should use the more commonly used islander fan excuses

1. Dp is injured/ family member dead/ doesnt have enough help

2. We need to spend money / At least we dont spend money like you guys

3. No fans in our arena because we dont have corporations in long island, havent you heard we are a farm land, disregard the 48 law firms literally across the street and the 15,000 people who go to hofstra who can walk to our arena instead of studying

4. We won 4 cups in a row...yeah its not an excuse but ...whats that why did we not win a playoff series again..NEVERMIND THAT WE WON 4 CUPS IN A ROW YOU LOSER

etc.

Seriously, this is a ridiculous argument. These teams have risen up against each other since the 70s. The outcome of the games between these two teams has rarely had any relation to their respective positions in the standings. To claim that the Rangers don't view it as a rivalry the way the Isles do is pure BS. It is spin that comes out in years that the Rangers don't do well in the season series. When the Rangers do well we hear all of the same taunts we are giving you. We're just able to admit that we really hate losing to the Rangers even when we do.

That's funny... the asterisks are covering up the two letters B and S. There was no vulgarity spelled out there. That's a hyperactive censor.
