The difference,as described in this article, is the Penguins managed to be bad enough for an extended period of time to qualify for very high draft status, if not lottery picks. And then had the good fortune and luck to be able to draft Crosby, Stall, Malkin, and Fleury. Then have some lower picks work hard to reach their potential like Letang and make a few quality trades and/or free agent signings (can you say good G.M.). If a team is consistently mediocre like the CBJ, you can not have the good draft status of the Penguins. Even when Columbus has had good picks, look what has happened with them. Just go through them one by one and the conclusions are obvious.
The only common thread in all of this is the importance of scouting/drafting ability of an organization along with some luck along the way. None of which the CBJ currently has. The only group that is more fortunate than being a CBJ Scout/Draft staff member is maybe being a weather meteorologist in Central Ohio. Either way, both groups constantly "get it" wrong but maintain their jobs.

Wait, so all we have to do is draft the reincarnation of Mario Lemieux and were good to go? Man, why didnt Howson think of that? We'll have this fixed in no time now.
