Tom Powers: Jury's still out on Wild as a playoff team

There are 5 comments on the story from Feb 4, 2011, titled Tom Powers: Jury's still out on Wild as a playoff team. In it, reports that:

GLENDALE, Ariz. - Nik Backstrom summed up the Wild's recent surge thusly: "Shift after shift it's like we know what we are doing." That's very accurate in a Finnish, understated sort of way.

I didn't like the article in the other paper this week that said Fletcher wants to make it to the playoffs with this group. If you're definitely going for the playoffs you need to address the need for at least one more goal scorer(preferably) someone with some speed. It's very important that the new gm doesn't fall into the trap that the old gm fell into, by falling in love with a group of average players.

Fletcher said "make it to the playoffs" not "win a Stanley Cup."

It doesnt do any good to get players that will do just well enough to make the PO's every year only to bow out after the 1st round. To admin, somehow that translates into a successful season. To the fans, unsuccessful. Especially since we've been waiting since 1967 to bring a cup home to the so-called "State of Hockey."

Some how for me, that doesnt mean anything until we get a couple, few championship banners hanging from the Xcel rafters. IF your going to own a team be prepared to spend the money it'll take to bring a Cup to MN, not just "make the PO's every friggin' year.

They are getting very lucky right now to win games. Once the puck stops hitting the post they will be in for a long losing streak.

The Wild have been a play off tease all season. But lately, yes, they seem to be playing more consistently. If they can maintain this I can see them qualifying as the 7th or 8th spot. Now that's good progress, but there remains off season work to be done. A prolific goal scorer would be a game-changer.

How much more money should they spend???.. oh wait they are right at the cap, like how they are every other year. I love how people out there think the owner is "cheap" and that the wild have all this money they can just spend to get players. The NHL has a salary CAP. In fact, the NHL is turning into a league where you have to be very smart and strategic with how you use that cap.

I think you ment to say... if your going to own a team, be prepared to get skilled players that can help bring a cup to MN..

Unfortently the Wild don't have much cap space to use for a few years to make any dramatic changes.. bearing any trades of course. I think Fletcher would be more than happy to bring in a Top 6 forward, but he doesn't have the resources or cap space to do that right now.
