If he formally retires, providing the league with the appropriate papers to that effect, the contract ends and does not count against the Islanders' salary cap..... http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story...

Herrmann good point.
But-Gordon shouldnt be praising Yann Denis. Has the guy made some brillant saves...yes. Has he let in some pretty weak goals yes. Yanni is a work in progress...but he has shown some flashes of talent- I say give him a chance. Personnaly I believe the Islanders should target players who can score(at least some players who can get their shots on net)...no reason to draft a goalie in the first 3-4 rounds.
He's providing some solid goaltending tonight in-front of no defense and very little offense!

2000 was the year that changed everything... for the worse. Mike Milbury gutted a fairly decent young team that included Roberto Luongo and Olli Jokinen to build around an 18 year old goaltender who reportedly handled the puck well and had one strong college game. This was the unraveling. A year later, promising youngsters in Tim Connolly, Taylor Pyatt, (The 2nd pick in 2001) Jason Spezza and Zdeno Chara were given away to acquire two players who missed full seasons due to hold outs, not injuries, in 2001. These moves created severe chemical imbalance on the team. Brad Isbister, who looked like a future captain and power forward, had his game suffer after these moves. Granted, he never made it with any other team, either; but these moves had an adverse effect on his game. Winning the 2001 lottery was a curse wrapped in a blessing. Everyone knew that Heatley or Gaborik should have gone first. One can only hope that the Islanders pick 1st again this year... and actually take Tavares.

When are the Isles gonna wake up and fire the entire training staff/ Has any other team in the league lost more games to injuries over the past 2 seasons. On the bright side, most of the training staff probably won't relocate to Kansas City.
great point. i was watching the game the other night and all the Islander players looked winded and tired. the conditioning of this team is horrible. i saw a few isles players bent over gasping for air, i didn't see any of the duck players do that at all.
